CF Trunk + Rear Aero?
I'm considering picking up an OEM (not CSL) style CF trunk for weight savings on track and was curious if anyone here runs one and if you have significant rear aero.
Are there any problems drilling holes and mounting a wing to CF? I know that CF is theoretically stronger than steel, but it flexes and has a very different behavior profile than steel. Any/all comments are welcome. |

Well first and foremost, if your looking for weight savings it's a good idea, if you are looking for serious "ass planting" while attaching a wing to it, re-think it. If your out for looks then totally do it.
For functional downforce you must go into the body/frame with any wing system you decide. I myself I'm running a OEM trunk with a GTS spoiler. Building my M3 I wanted to go towards a GTS "clubsport" package and look......I feel a slight difference in the rear but I'm also running a DOWNFORCE rear bumper diffuser. I eventually will do an APR wing or Voltex and custom some brackets Into the actual body/frame of the car. Hope this helped. |

Agreed the cf will flex with enough downforce and best to build internal bracing if going that route. I don't run a shit ton of downforce with only 3-4 degrees of attack angle and just left my oem trunk. Hard to balance front downforce anyway if you run significant rear aero downforce.

Agreed but completely disagree that you "must go into the body/frame". There is plenty of downforce to be had from direct mount to OEM trunk.

I'm looking to shave weight wherever possible and was considering the trunk swap. So it sounds like pretty much everyone has stuck with the OEM trunk for whatever reason.
I would be curious how much hardware you would have to add back to make the CF trunk rigid enough to handle the downforce of the wing. |

just mount in on the oem trunk since you are going to gut the whole car.

Are you also planning to do a lightweight battery? If not, I would do a lightweight battery instead of the CF trunk. It will probably cost less, save more weight, and then allow you to run the OEM trunk with all the strength it offers.

Actually, yes.
Going with a made to order battery once I get the PCA on the OEM battery. http://www.falconev.com/batteries.html |

I ran a CF trunk lid with a large Brooks composite CF rear spoiler. Mounts were designed to accommodate supports that bolted to the rear quarters. This was where the GT2 cars mounted the rear spoiler as well.
