I cannot accurately answer that question but it was for at least some months. The reason is because it was so infrequent when I would get the noise. It definitely could have been low for a while, but the symptoms weren't always eveident.

I have the same whine noise in my cabin too. Checked the power steering fluid but it was at a decent level, topped it off anyway, noise got a little better but a good bit is still there.
Was thinking of doing a full flush and came across this video: Anyone know if you can use method to just suck out all the crap or do you have to get under the car empty it from there? |

What is he using to drain the reservoir? And are all of those steps really necessary? Seems extreme

So I guess I should have emptied mine before putting in the new fluid, lol.

Update: the steering column noise has subsided. I haven't had any issues with the original problem either. All I did was top off the p/s fluid. Knock on wood, but no issues or signs of any leaks

Glad you got it fixed. I had a similar noise issue which seemed worse with turning. Had the PS fluid topped off and it was solved.

I picked up mine up at the local dealer and it was the same price if not cheaper when you factor in the shipping costs from other vendors
