Battery exploded

So I'm fairly sure my battery exploded. So I o to start my car and it wouldn't turn over so I look to check the battery and it is covered in an orange substance and there is a liquid at the bottom of the case. This did not seem good so I had my car towed. My question is what could cause this and is there a better battery option out there versus getting a replacement oem one?

It is the OEM battery? or has some clown swopped it out for some aftermarket POS?
