Bracing myself for a shafting!

Car went into limp mode and she is at the dealer. They're running the throttle valve diagnosis at the moment. Out of warranty at 49k miles. Bracing myself chaps!

Ouch, ever thought about taking it to a BMW shop instead of the dealer?

It all boils down to convenience for me guys. The closest indie shop is about 45 minutes away and this is my only car, so I would have to get a rental car. I thought about tackling it myself, but I dont have the tools nor the skills. I might bite the bullet on this one.

Lessons

1) Buy and extended warranty!

or

2) Don't keep car past warranty

Any decent mechanic should be able to use the DIY on this forum to be able to do the labor for you. And you can get these things for about 8-900 a piece.

Negative on both of those. The fun modding begins *after* the warranty expires

There's your problem right there. $2700 in parts? Bullsht.

Tischer sells them for $864 a piece. Assuming both went bad at the same time (don't know about that one), that's $1728. That's almost $1k off the price right there

I was able to get them to match tischers parts as they gave me a $400 discount.

I appreciate the help golfrrr, but they gave me ten percent off the job which equates to roughly 400 bucks which matches tischers parts costs

Despite a lot of convincing arguments, you're willing to give away your hard earned money. I think the whole point of you starting this thread is gone. I use to be like you and went to the stealer for everything. But not anymore. Thanks to the excellent DIY section on this board I am a mechanic overnight. Probably the only thing I can't do is an engine rebuild. Do yourself a favour and do it yourself and enjoy the saving. You have to start somewhere.

I hit limp mode yesterday (just under 47k). Hasn't happened since, but the car feels a little off at low RPM. Really hoping it's not the TVA =/

Agree, as much as I'd love to putter around with the car and have time for a hobby to learn these things, I'm not at a point in my life when I can find the time. Time does have an opportunity cost associated with it, both monetary and non-monetary (spending time with family, kids etc). At some point would love to do more DIY stuff, but in the meantime so much easier to deal with the dealer and get a free loaner and have a job done right, and as you said, if you have a good relationship with your SA they will match prices (usually doesn't take more than a couple minutes of conversation and a web page link! ) Good luck!
