To those who proudly serve the country...

There seem to be a lot of you who have Ms? Just a matter of coming back with a lump sum to spend? I think it's cool, I'm just use to the movies depicting soldiers struggling to get back into society following service.

I'm assuming many different circumstances but I'm curious to hear

some use their money saved/combat pay from deployments (which is tax free), others come from wealthy backgrounds, some are investment savvy, some buy used for a good price.

Combination of boredom, money accumulated, you can buy it for less while overseas, and after being gone for a year you just damn earned something nice.

Dont get it twisted though. I am slated to go back to Afghanistan in June. It was not a cake walk the first time either, don't feel like having to duck and dive every day this time lol....

Apparently some people think the military gets paid more... ignorance.

As far as being money savvy, there are specific classes that are given on how to handle your money well and the people that I hang out with don't generally blow money like some civilians I have encountered.

All active and retired are millionaires. We just love to earn hazardous duty pay. Easiest way for funds to pay for a M3's. Seriously thanks

I am in the military and don't know what mean. Maybe read the post, no one said anything about "civilians" thinking the military earns more money than they actually do.

It's not that much of a stretch for me at all. I fly helicopters in the Army (Apaches), obviously an officer and I have a wife and no kids (vasectomy)

Did a tour in Afghanistan and came back completely debt free. Wanted something nice to drive and it came down to an M3, 4th Gen Viper, or a GT-R. Obviously settled on the M and have never looked back. Bought it sight unseen from Melbourne BMW in Florida (was stationed in NY at the time).

I was referring to being money savvy with the stock market, etc. Example, buying stock in Apple and Google in the early 2000s.

Some are, they are few, but they are out there. I know of one enlisted junior Marine that inherited millions. Bought an expensive house, new Porsche, and came under suspicion from authorities until they realized it was just an inheritance. lol.

Sounds familiar, Being a DINK(dual income no kids, wife is also in the military) No debt after college, very little expenses, and deployments we both came back from Germany with BMWs (wife got the 128i 6MT). Considering the discount overseas military sales has with BMW and the fact you don't pay any taxes on the car makes it easier to justify the decision to yourself. I would not had bought a M3 if I wasn't living oversea, but it was very hard to pass up the opportunity.

My dad served 20 years in the Navy, no debt and could never afford a car over 20k. I guess that's the result of a wife and 2 kids? He's always been happy and content with what he has.
