Push-in = the most powerful camera move you can have in a scene. Very subtle but it brings you in to a intimate connection with the character.

Roger Deakins uses the push in the best imo. Amazing cinematographer and yet he hasnt won an award for cinematography. Wtf is up with that?

I think you may be taking this way too literally... LOL

Thoughts on the Nov 3rd Canon announcement? It's do or die for RED with their Scarlet sale launch, too. RED putting the Scarlet on the market and stillmotion selling their F3 -- sounds like the insiders have a little knowledge that something big is to come. But then again, it could just be the "Imagin8ion" release and nothing really special to follow.

it's definitely a new ef-mount camera from Canon. I play on buying at least one. Plus swapping my D3 for the 1DX.

Well since this is a cinematography thread, i though i'd talk about cinematography and cinematographers.

you're perfectly fine.
i love the push-in and use it a lot, especially with wide angles and large apertures close-up.

Definitely, definitely excited to see what's coming. I don't want to ditch my 5D2, but I just might! And then there's the moire reduction on the 1DX... mmm...

hey man, you said you wanted to see the video from NY, so here it is. i'm not entirely thrilled with it, but it is what it is: just a behind the scenes.

Looks good! I actually brought my slider with me hoping to get a few extra b-roll shots for you. I was lugging my cam, slider, and monopod from Queens to Chinatown, to BK, and back to Queens! Haha but it's all good. Please do let me know the next time you're around NYC again!

Tech questions about the vid: What preset did you shoot in? Was it standard with sharpness turned down and a WB shift? Did you grade it?

I usually shoot Cinestyle but would sometimes just like to skip the grading process all together out of laziness...

man, I feel so bad. they got way off schedule by the time we were heading downtown, you were having to leave. and it was so tight in the designer's studio space near Chinatown, I had to sit in the hall most of the time.
I used cinestyle plus sharpness and then graded in color.

they're going back soon, and they dropped jaw for the video so hopefully they'll bring me back.

No worries -- we'll try again the next time you're around. How much sharpness did you bump in cam? I hate adding it in post...

And the video is great -- I can see why they liked it. Clean grade, well composed

Learning about filmmaking/photography is the first step. Getting the camera to apply your practice is the second step.

How old school are you, man? I bought my first camcorder without knowing a single thing about filmmaking, and the skill just developed without ever having opened a book, taken a class, or watched a tutorial about "proper" techniques. I guess some of us are just naturally good at what we do.

IMO, put the book down, pick up a camera, and shoot something.

What are some good online resources for the beginning videographer, that has the cameras, but only stills experience?

I have ab5D MkII, a 7D and some really decent lenses, but I've only done a few minutes of video. I spend so much time on my stills that I know that I'll have to carve out video time to get any good at it.

in all seriousness, I don't know of any resources off the top of my head so I'd just utilize google and let us know what you come up with.

There is no single "right way" of learning. Something that works for someone may not work for someone else. Personally, I like to learn by fiddling around with stuff and learning by making mistakes and then practicing.
