Unofficial Nordschleife time - 8:02

According to a South African journalist the new M3 bests the previous model by "about 20" seconds, note: 8:22 - 20 = 8:02.

Quote:
"And while on 'Nordschleife' I was told that this M3 was around twenty seconds quicker than the M3 it replaces."
Scan of the review with quote here.

I find it both amusing and quite entertaining how the unofficial time keeps changing AND CONSTANTLY DECREASING.
8:12 : autoblog.nl
8:10 : Gerhard Richter
8:04 : Autospies ("beats Carrera S")
8:02 : The Star (approximate)

When will we see the magic 8:00 barrier broken??? If we take the 20 seconds to be exact this puts the car faster than the following:

-911 T3 (993)
-911 Carerra S (997)
-Lamborghini Diablo GT
-Ferarri 575M Maranello
-Ferarri 360 Modena
-BMW M5&M6
-Aston Martin V8 Vantage

The Dutch car magazine called "Autovisie" who talked with some BMW chaps predicted a ring time off 8.00 min ..............................
Based on a average lapspeed off 156 km/h, track distance 20.8 km

Did post it somewhere, can`t find it anymore, so here it is again.............

What I find so amusing is that no where in the article is there evidence that the M runs an 8:04, nor is there evidence to suggest that it will, or has, run anything better than an 8:12.

Read it for yourself and tell me otherwise.

Didn't swamp say "according to a journalist"?
There won't be any evidence unless a test on Nürburgring is done (probably Sportauto supertest). So I think all this estimations based on statements from the BMW guys is the best we get so far...

Best regards, south

In fact it does talk about the 8:02 time. The official time for the E46 M is 8:22 so twenty seconds off is 8:02.

The article states that while the journalist was at the "ring" he was told the new M is twenty seconds faster than the outgoing generation.

Read the thread starter carefully....

The 8:04 was from a seperate source -see Autospies

And the 8:12 was a BS time from Autoblog

Oh and the director of the M division (Gerhard Richter) was quoted saying that the new M3 could break 8:10 without breaking a sweat. This is an awefully carelless statement from the director if this isnt true.

I remember when M5 V10 were introduced, the pressrelese said the new M5 did in close to 8.00 min. We all now know the officiall time for M5 V10 is 8.13 min. I predict the new M3 will be close to that time. Below 8.00 min with the new M3 is impossible without R-tires. Audi R8 does the N-ring in 8.04 min and its a midengine with semi-R-tires, then new M3 wont beat the R8.

Well what on earth does "close to" mean?

You have no evidence for your claims re. E92 M3's performance, yet you believe that you can dispute more than one source's report by rattling off meaningless stats about unrelated cars

Agreed (Swamp also pointed this out in the OP). Richter would have to be a certified idiot to make a public statement that is false on a topic so many people are watching so closely, and I have a hard time believing the Vice President of the M division can be a certified idiot.

Why are you putting so much stock in the 8:12 time? What gives you belief to trust that time but not some of the other ones that have been quoted? 8:12 is as much of a rumored time as the rest. There is no way you can make that statement while latching on to a number that has as much credibility as any of the other ones.

"Close to" means within 13 seconds. 8:13 is the official time for the M5.

Faster than R8 0-200 km/h

Who cares about BMWs "official" time. I trust Sportauto at the most consistent source of ring times. Further, I don't have the actual source but at least on the acceleration part of the track time equation we do have the new M being faster than the R8 0-200 km/h!!

Source

That being said it would be quite suprising if the M3 bested the R8 time.

Exactly. Some BS rumor on autoblog in Holland is no better than "close to" 20 seconds quicker than the E46 M3 from a SA journalist. We know from pics with the timing equpment that test drivers continue to pound the ring. So perhaps 8:12 was the best time on a cold winter track and that is consistent with the best time now being "very close" to 8:00 flat.

Or why dont we just listen to Gerhard since he built the thing and knows how fast it goes. Sounds pretty easy to me

Not very illuminating

I guess I find "about 20 seconds faster than X" to be more illuminating and slightly more precise than "I can drive a lap in 8:10 carrying on a conversation". Not to mention the result is more exciting.

Swamp,

Here is the exact quote...there is another pearl in it other than the 8:10 comment. I think we can have a more precise estimate dont you?

"It might seem a little too well mannered, but it is faster around the Nurburgring Nordschleife than the V-10 powered M5 sedan, says M GmbH boss Gerhard Richter. How much faster? Precisely 3.54 seconds a lap, says Richter, who adds the new M3 will turn an 8:10 lap without raising a sweat: "I could do that while talking to you as I drive.""

I was putting stock in the 8:12 claim because I mistakenly thought that an pre-release car had officially run that time. My bad.

Regarding the other hypothetical times; they are just that...actually they are just HYPE. Its not that I don't believe the M will run an impressive time, it just won't run a sub 8:05 on the tires it will be delivered with. And, I think an 8:05 is very optimistic...an 8:10 is more likely.

What I don't like about the article it that it was created to take on a life of it's own, which it already has here on this forum. Some journalist, who doesn't know shit, makes a claim that the M runs that fast and people start believing it.
