Speeding Ticket

had a bad weekend, got speeding ticket (first time), i was driving 91 in 50mph zone. its 11 points in NY, i dont have any other points on my driving license. i heard hiring Traffic lawer can help to reduce points to 8. i dont know how they will do it?
do i have to take "Defensive Driving Course" to reduce 4 points. i havent send ticket yet to DMV because i have to appear in court inperson. All tips/suggestions are welcome.

Well, when I was young and severely dumb... I was going 120 (cop put 105+) on a 65 (hwy).

Was $1,750 (around 2007 - when ticket prices doubled for speeding), and it was only two points. I'm not sure why NY makes it eleven points, it's pretty harsh - but I hope you can get it reduced as low as possible.

Damn, 11 points?! That's quite harsh.

I'm assuming you're rather young? Just a guess on my part, what with the +40 over the limit being your first ticket. Definitely get a lawyer because having a 'reckless' on your driving record is going to crush your insurance.

Not saying you need to drive like an old lady, but my goodness, tone it down just a bit.

Where was this in NY?

If it was anywhere in the 5 boroughs you're SOL. You have to go through the TVB and there's no negotiating tickets with them. You're either guilty or not guilty (and I believe they have like a minimum 75% conviction rate).

If you're found guilty your license is suspended at 11 points so you have to take your DD course before you get it back.

Damn that sucks. After two speeding tickets in NYC I've learned not to speed unless I'm in LI/upstate/NJ , You can't beat or plea deal tickets down here.

Your only hopes of winning is if he made a huge mistake when writing down ticket info, or if he doesn't show up in court (he has three attempts to appear though). I would definitely suggest finding a lawyer, but i'm not sure how much it will help. Best of luck.

Get off your high horse people - if you drive an M3 you know how easy it is to exceed the speed limit by 40mph or more. Shit, in light traffic an M3 driven at 120 is safer than some old beater traveling 65, so lighten up on the judgement and give the OP a CONSTRUCTIVE opinion on his situation, if you have one...

I'm sorry, but I have no forgiveness for people who speed excessively like this. Especially in a country where you can easily track an M3 anywhere/anytime you want. You want to speed? You want to drive like you stole it? Fine, go to the track. Don't do it in queens where you risk other lives.

Time to take responsibility for your actions, these "speeding" threads are getting old and are more suitable for college mailing lists rather than a forum like this.

Nope dont have kids. But you can't sit here and say that you've never opened it up a bit on the road.

+1 on the lawyer. No plea bargaining in the city unforfunately, you either win or lose. Where in Queens did they nab you? Only thing to do is learn from this and slow it down. Cops are getting crafty with their hiding spots around the city highways lately. Specifically around the Whitestone Expwy and BQE. I'm battling 2 of them right now. High speed buzz isn't worth the hangover after having seeing the reds and blues in your mirror.

There is speeding, then there is SPEEDING and driving crazy. Our cars can handle a lot, but do it in the right area. I don't know the specifics and I'm not judging. We don't need to have another thing happen like that guy who spit his car in half in Florida.
Glad you didn't get arrested, and like they said...buy a V1. And slow it down.

In TX, defensive driving dismisses a ticket, but can't do that with 20+ over the limit. And you can take it once a year (used to be every 2). Most of us speed, but you need to know where. I only do it on desolated highways, with nobody around. Perfect driving record at my 49. Good luck OP.

Dude, I don't know about the laws in USA, but I highly suggest you to get a radar detector (I have Escort 9500ix, it is amazing)

They are legal in 95% of the states including where OP got the ticket.

He may have been lasered though as thats what cops use in NY sometimes.
9500 detects laser as well

Not 0 seconds, but pretty much less than 1 second so you have to act really quick (just to reduce your speed, you still will get the ticket)

Yeah, I "know how easy it is to speed" in my M3 but does not make it an excuse for being within 9 MPH of traveling at double the posted speed limit. The temptation is always there, but if you are going play, then expect to pay when you got. I would consider that constructive advice for anyone on this board.

There are far too many factors (weather, road surface, driver ability, traffic, animals) that can individually or collectively go wrong at that speed to end in tragedy, even on the Autobahn which is "built for speed" and with a large population of drivers that can actually drive and know the rules of the road for passing.

Speed is always with risk, and the OP came out on the negative side. My "constructive" advice to the OP would be get a lawyer and hope for the best.

Stupidest I ever got was cruise control 80mph on a 65mph zone at 4am with no cars around. I know one of my friends tried to beat the limiter around 2am and he was going... 165mph on a 65mph zone. CHP wrote him up for 130+... one month suspension and 2700USD fine. He didnt get arrested and that surprised me. Sorry... Just story to tell.
