I have an e90 M3 6MT and an F80 M3 DCT. Love them both. Many differences, but in many ways very similar BMW feel. Many here are fixated on the sound, but I gotta tell you the F80 cold start in sport mode is LOUD. As loud as my M3 with Borla exhaust.

I like the f80 sound, has a rough, kind of dirty racing car tone to it. F80 has much better mileage, front end/steering is glued to the road, torque is fantastic, car is lighter feeling, and the price (about 65-68K without all the electronic nonsense) isn't much higher than the E90.

Nothing sounds like the s65, but that wasn't BMW's intent. 911's (in fact they sound more like an F80) don't sound as good as an s65 either, but that doesn't stop anybody from buying them.

Just my 2 cents.

Trust me, I won't be buying the f8x M3/M4 at all. Even if it was the last M. Like I said before, I will be either getting the new M6 or X5M. And if not, will be going to the Pcar.

I will always keep my e92 M3. Nothing wrong with that car. Plus it will take a lot of money from somebody offering me, for me to get rid of it. The new M3/M4 sound is too ricey like a Honda with a huge grapefruit canon for a muffler. I still love the way my M3 sounds when I start her up. It sounds way better and it will still sound way better than the new M, even after say, 10 years.

I might, for a GT350. Should I be ashamed of that?

For an enthusiast, buying a car is about finding what speaks to you. For me, the sound is a huge part of that; not to mention the huge difference in character between a N/A engine and a turbocharged engine.

The bark of a V8 is not something I'll ever be ashamed to indulge in.

If I got the new one, my specs would be:
Sakhir Orange
Black Extended Leather
19" Black Wheels
M Adaptive Suspension
6MT Trans

Now that I've got it all sorted out in my head, but gut is telling me to hold off and appreciate (pun inbound) my E90 M3 and wait for a used F80 which has already (boom!) depreciated.
Maybe wait to snap up a pre-lci model from one of the gotta-have-the-latest crowd. Agree with the sentiment that we are all BMW people. The fart can m4 clowning should stop in this forum.

Why?

This is the E9x forum after all. As long as it's light-hearted, what's the harm? My brother-in-law (F80 driver) certainly doesn't miss an opportunity to give me a hard time about my worse gas mileage and his better performance. I'm going to take every opportunity to remind him that his car sounds like a lawn mower/cow

We should learn to love fart cans?

Inline sixes are OK and I would consider them for a daily driver, but for higher uses will avoid them for now and the near future.

I think half the fun of a fast car, is hearing that engine scream.

It's a tough call for sure. I did a euro delivery last summer with a buddy who just got an M4, we put 1200 miles on it, did some laps around the ring and I loved it. Such a great car, but then I get back in mine and hear the awesomeness that it makes it tough to consider going the f8x route.

Sound is such a huge part of the driving experience, but so is torque... You just have to figure out which you'll trade for the other.

Sound is big for me, but so is performance. So i understand when people get into a F80 and are blown away by the power.

For me i have a c7 corvette coming soon. So at 460HP / 460TQ and a n/a V8 engine. I dont believe i had to trade for anything in that sense. the only thing i did have ti trade for was going from a BMW to chevy. which is something to talk about.

I test drove one when it first came out and I wasn't thrilled. Like Sunny D said....chassis is great, tons of torque, but there is a lag and I didn't like the steering. Personally I didn't like the interior.....and I don't want to even mention the noise it makes.

Good Luck!
I agree with everything in this post except the lag. If you drive in efficient throttle and a low shift setting [S1] you may feel some "lag" (not necessarily turbo lag) - but in Sport or Sport+ throttle plus S2 or S3 shift settings - no lag at all - the turbos stay spooled up even when you're not on the gas - in the 14,000 miles I've driven my F8x - there is no doubt that in Sport or Sport+ throttle responds just as quickly as in my E93.

The correct answer is go try to drive one somewhere where you can truly "open it up" in Sport+ and S2 or S3 shift settings - you'll quickly see what I mean when I say no lag. After you've done that - then decide which you like better - if you still like E9x better - stick with that. If you like F8x better, get that (but not because of peer pressure)!!

Actually I also disagree with steering (it is incredibly precise) and the sound - it's not better than the E9x - but very good in its own way. The S65 sound is unbeatable above 6000 rpm. But an S65 below 6,000 rpm does not sound as good to me as the S55 (which sounds a little louder and more aggressive - especially in Sport+ with the pops it makes on throttle lift off).

Hrm. Around 3,500 RPM, the S65 sounds like a muscle car. Above 6,000 RPM it sounds like a race car. I really enjoy both of those sound characteristics, so I guess that has a lot to do with why I'm so strongly considering going a route other than F80 with my next purchase.

Get both...I did!

We have the same setup. My M3 sleeps all winter under a blanket while my 328 M sport deals with the snow. Great set up.
