The B8 S4 is a beast for what it is and what it competes against (335). Software upgrades to the S4 would get you near M3/RS4 power but Audi is cracking down on mods so you might have issues with warranty if you go that route.
Ideally I'm looking for a V8. Thus M3, RS4, etc. What are your opinions on the B8 S5 with 4.2 V8 (no FSI, as carbon buildup seems to be a problem)

IMHO at least for the E9x generation of cars, if you are getting anything else besides the M3 you are settling for second best. In its category of course.

Just the look of the S5 trumps the 335. Too bad S5 is more a Grand tourer than sports car like M3.

RS have superior brakes though. 8 pot front callipers. New front disks and pads are a snip under £1200 here in uk...

Try both cars mate

I owned an RS4 prior to my M3.

M3 has better steering, better suspension, and has a more dynamic feel overall. RS4 has a torquier engine, better exhaust sound, and the AWD allows you to drive the car harder with more of a safety net.

Both great cars, each having some advantages over the other.

The B7 S4 is not in the same league whatsoever in terms of any performance parameter, and feels very sloppy compared to the M3 or the RS4.

That's the general consensus that I'm getting. The RS4 with Tubi Style is amazing!

2012 E92 M3  [10.00]
I owned a B7 RS4 prior to my M3 as well.

It's hard to answer your question without a little more info like price and options. The B7 RS4 is a great car but has it's issues as well.

Great: Torque and AWD make it an animal out of the gate. It's very easy to drive on the street and will make novice drivers appear like pros. It can be driven hard in any condition. The exhaust is phenomenal in sport mode. Solid build and materials throughout. Interior is on par with many high end luxury vehicles. It's rare and exclusive. I can count on one hand how many I have seen since it's arrival in the US. I have E92 MT and have to say the B7 RS4 shifter is superior. It's precise and smooth. The resale value on the car is very good. In December 2011, I sold my 2007 RS4 with 71,000 for $39,000.

The Not So Great: My car had DRC issues which was covered under warranty but was still annoying. The carbon issue is no joke. The car would run fine however I noticed loss of power every 7500-11000 miles. After a carbon clean (usually $750-1200 depending on the shop) it was noticeably faster. I had two carbon cleans in 50,000 miles. The car constantly consumed oil. I followed the break in period to a "T" but the car consumed a quart every 1000 miles from the first 1000. Although it's an animal out of the gate it gets winded quickly past 60 mph. Not that big of a deal in a city but it can be demotivating on the highway. Lastly, the BOSE radio is completely BROKE. It was an expensive option that never failed to disappoint. The EPS on the M3 is superior in every way.

I prefer the M3. I love its looks. Although the OEM exhaust is a bit week the engine sound is superb. I have had 0 issues and have 10250 miles on the car. It's a more rewarding experience and its a blast in the snow with proper snow tires. My family and friends also comment that the M3 looks better inside in out compared to the RS4. If I had to complain about the M3 it would be the individual color choices at $5000 and the lack of Brembo break options.

Let me know if you want more advice before your purchase I will be happy to help.

Have you driven a B8 S4? the E90 335 does not compare to that car.

B8 S4 gives up a lot to the E90 M3 in peformance, so they are also apples and oranges there. But it's a lot more car than a 335.

Hurricane good response. I have also owned a B7 RS4 and the carbon build up and oil consumption was a major issue for me as well. I also suffered a crack in the engine block and lucky I was under warranty and was provided a new engine at about 39k miles.

The engine in the RS4 was fantastic but with so many issues I became extremely paranoid and thus ruined the driving experience you should be getting from that vehicle.

I switched over to a 2010 e90 m3 in 2010..traded in the RS4 and have never looked back. I have had zero issues with the car since I bought brand new. O2 sensors failed the first few hundred miles but after that nothing.

Idrive is far superior than the MMI in the RS4 and the seats in the M are far superior as well for long road trips or at the track.

RS4 is rare a beautiful car and comes with all the right tools for a performance sedan. The shifter that Hurricane mentioned was just incredible and I loved the feel of the steering wheel much better in the RS4.

Can't go wrong with either OP. I told myself I would never buy another Audi but when the TTRS came out I ended up biting the bullet and now this is my daily and the E90 is my nice weather car (I know weird a sedan is the weekend car and the coupe the daily).

I still have issues with the TTRS and as fun of a car and brutally fast (when tuned) I wouldn't miss it as much as I would the M if I had to sell it.

I as well, sold my RS4 and eventually purchased a M3. Quite a long thread and very informative. I saw a few pointers on the carbon-build up, it's not a big issue and is a standard maintenance...now. I believe about every 30k it was recommended. Approximately $1k-$1200 to have it done. It is the Lamborghini Gallardo engine, so it's not a bad trade off.

Versus the M3, I'm not used to a rear wheel drive vehicle, but the Audi Quattro can't be touch...dry, wet, snow.

The seats themselves, specifically the side bolsters, wear unevenly vs. the rest of the seat. Many used ones you'll see this, Audi/Recaro production opted to use some inferior leather.

Per the transmission, you'll want the 2007 model. Audi made a change in the transmission from the 07 to 08 models. The 07 feels much more natural/organic/by-wire sort of feel.

Per the engine/exhaust note, there's the "S" button. It stands for super awesome or something like that. When pushed, baffles on the exhaust open, throttle response changes and steering tightens up.

Mods, forget it. There isn't much; which drove me to getting rid of it. I did the AWE downpipes and exhaust. It sounded ungodly, so wicked. Well, there's the supercharger, but you can buy two Kia's for the price of that thing.

The downs: The navigation will drive you bonkers. You're better off getting out a compass and reading star alignments to find your way.

I really don't have a M3 vs. RS4 stance, as I haven't owned the M3 long enough to make a fair claim/assessment. But, the RS4 is very exclusive, only 2012 imported. Half were probably ruined by douchers. It was never touted as a 0-60 car, though respectable, it's the 65mph - 125mph faster than you in 6th gear car.

Sorry but the rs4 is not the lambo gallardo engine! Lol. The R8 has a detuned v10 that is the lambo engine but not the old rs4 (or any car except the R8).

Carbon build up is a big deal because it robs a ton of power. Maybe is not a hassle but to have power sucked away when the car already put down less power to the wheels than really stated. Usually was putting down 310-320 at the high end on countless dyno's. Pretty widely accepted this thing was putting down less than what audi stated. Couple that with another hit of power from carbon loss and the fact it weighs 4k pounds, the m3 simply performs rapage on the rs4. Its not even close in a straight line and around corners.

Heck the m3 still beats the relatively newer rs5 in straights and turns. Despite 450 hp, the rs5 is 4k poudns and has drivetrain loss through AWD
