Here's information on the Michelin Pilot Supersport which Michelin claims to be the successor for the Pilot Sport PS2. BMW M and the M3 are explicitly mentioned in the press release so I guess BMW will approve that tire for OE soon. Surprisingly only the 18" factory sizes for the M3 are mentioned but not (yet?) the 19" rear size.

Michelin’s original U.S. ETA for the Pilot Super Sport line is May 1, 2011 (per Ben@tirerack).

Here is the full tiretrack track review:

Pilot Supersport vs PS3
Quote:
Certified as original equipment for more than 200 vehicles, the MICHELIN Pilot Sport PS2 is currently fitted on the most prestigious vehicles in the market. Now its successor – the MICHELIN Pilot Super Sport – is taking up the challenge.

With the announcement of the worldwide rollout of the new MICHELIN Pilot Super Sport, scheduled to begin in January 2011, Michelin has confirmed its wholehearted commitment to the world of high performance vehicles. In first quarter 2010, the Group presented and brought to market the MICHELIN Pilot Sport 3.

The tire was designed for a broad range of vehicles, including sporty models of city cars and compacts as well as large, powerful sedans. It also equips true small sports cars, such as roadsters and coupes. With the extra-large 18 to 19-inch range, the MICHELIN Pilot Sport 3 is also suitable as optional equipment on non-sporting models.

The new MICHELIN Pilot Super Sport is positioned at the top of the ultra highperformance range, for truly outstanding, world-class vehicles.

It's about time, the PS2 has been out forever.

I have no doubt that this will be a better tire, but realistically for street driving, even very aggressive canyons and backroads, I doubt there will be much of an appreciable difference.

But very glad to see they upped the mileage at the same time as increasing performance.

Its funny these companies roll out new tires and never for 19" M3 sizes. Only 18" or for PCars. Its the exact same thing for the new Toyos that are out.

They needed to do something about the new PZeros - great tires. Glad they did.

18s for P cars? You are showing your age ;-)

What P car comes with 18s? You would be hard pressed to find a Boxster or Cayman with 18s; all are on 19s now. (Yes, its an upgrade for Carrera and Cayman/Boxster models, but most cars in US are upgraded to 19s.)

Thanks for the info.
What's the point of the PS3 then? They might as well label it a high performance all season tire.

I will spend a little extra money to get a superior tire "tuned" for the m3.

I dont understand why some people look for cheap tires when your life depends on it. I want the best. Period.

+1. I want to know too. What is the difference between PS2, PS3 and PSS?

These are in the same category as PS2, "Max Performance", so they will most likely not match the performance of Yokohama AD08 and Bridgestone RE11 in the dry. You will probably get better treadwear and wet performance in exchange though.

The base 997 non S comes with 18's...you say what Pcar comes with 18s yet you list them. Whats sad is that Michelin released sizes for the nonexistent Pcars with 18" wheels but not 19" M3s..

I think thats too tall, also I am talking about OEM sizes. They release these tires in OEM sizes for 18" equipped M3s, but with the 997 they run the full lineup from 18s and 19s including the 305/30/19 that GT3s come with along with the 997.1 or .2 4S. They should offer GTS size for the rear at 285/30/19s.

If you look at the performance "circle" between the two, the PS3, mainly improve on wet traction over the PS2's.
The PSS seem to have significant improvements in virtually all categories including wear.
