Motortrend 2011 Mustang GT vs M3

Featured on M3POST HOMEPAGE.

I knew this was coming. I also thought the Mustang would do well, but this is indeed impressive.

http://www.motortrend.com/roadtests/...son/index.html

RESULTS:
Quote:
1ST PLACE: BMW M3
Did you blink and miss the M3's onionskin advantage over the GT? Here's a hint: It's in the chassis, not underhood.

2ND PLACE: MUSTANG GT
Never has a loss felt so much like a win. From not once considered to full-blown contender, 5.0 officially puts the world on notice.

Upon reading the article. I was thinking that the vote would go to the Mustang. It seemed like they preferred the 'stang but I was surprised to see the outcome. Even if it was only marginal. Kudos to Ford.

+1. Major Kudos to Ford.

However, I place value on fit and finish, cosmetics, etc.

Congratulations to Ford, they built on hell of a car. Great price and performance. I would be curious to test drive one but probably would never buy one. The competition is getting better and better. Hopefully the next gen m3 will set a higher bench mark for others to follow.

I knew the 5.0 would be a rocket. Good work Ford!

That said, I'm way too much of a snob to drive one unless it was just a track toy.

Well, the M3 is gonna have its hands full against the 2012 Boss 302, nevermind the Leguna Seca edition. No surprise since Ford called the M3 out as the benchmark for the Boss.

Congrats to the Ford guys. The new Mustang GT is a beast. Of course, subjectively, I love the look and feel of the M3 much more. It feels more expensive because it is.......by alot. I could buy a fully equipped Mustang GT plus a really nice boat for the price of one M3. But I think I'd still rather have the M3.

On a side note, I sat in the new Mustang a couple weeks ago and let me tell you, it looks fantastic on the inside. Not M3 standards, but it blows the holy hell out of the Camaro and Challenger.....

+1 I'm with you on that. Its not even what other people think, in my mind BMW will always be best and what I wanted as a kid.

The American brands are putting the pressure on which makes BMW work that much harder

Another test car with Contis on it. WTF, BMW. I like how MT says the ZCP car has "stickier" tires than the non-ZCP car. A non-ZCP car with 18" PS2's on it probably would have performed better than a ZCP car with the Contis. Oh well...

The 2012 Boss is a seriously awesome idea and it's the first time they haven't mucked up a hot Mustang with a boat anchor in front or a half-assed IRS setup in the back, I can't wait to see what they can do.

Why would BMW supply a test car for a comparision test on the slower of the tires available on the M3?

I'm thinking that the Boss 302 will be a purpose track built road car. Quite polar to the M3 which is toned down for the road and livable on a day by day basis. I'm sure it will not be a problem to beat the numbers the M3 posted. When they do a comparison they should throw in a Dinan/ RD Sport stroker, a BBK, some Motons and performance exhaust and I think the Boss 302 might have a good match.

Probably because MT just said "gimme a car" to and BMW said "rokay." Edmunds probably had the same car when they did their comparo against the CTSV a little bit ago, it was on contis too. The tires aren't the only reason this was so close, but it was a big part of it. There's a reason nobody is using the CSC3's in a hardcore application.

That's the Leguna Seca edition. The standard Boss will be no more a track car than a GT or GT500, or an M3 for that matter.

Well sure, but once you throw in mods, its another car entirely.

It would also be at least 3 times the price of the Boss LS.

This just depresses me, I know it shouldnt......and maybe I am even acting like a spoiled brat but I feel like I spent a good amount of money to have this car and the fact that they can do the same thing performance wise for $40K is a bummer! Hahahaha. I know how Porsche owners etc must feel now when the GTR came out and was able to do the same thing for half the $$!!!

In the end, Ford did do a an incredible job, absolutely mind blowing in fact. Doesnt change the fact that I now dislike Ford even more! Hahahaha. Bastards!

sad day to own an m3

however after taking a closer look, this m3 is the same one tested againt the cts-v, and the testers said that the conti sport tires were a big reason in the way the m3 handeled(worse).

edit: didnt see previous posts, however the msrp and specs of this m3 are same as the one w cts v

Alan Mulally has done a good job with Ford and not just with the new Mustang. Still it's a luxury car versus a non luxury car. You can always find a car that is cheaper and faster but there are bound to be tradeoffs. In the end it's about what makes you happy when you are behind the wheel.

I like the Boss 302 but I need a sedan so the M3 is the most likely car for me. I'd prefer AWD but as of now the best option is a M3 sedan with snows (and chains if need be).

That is unless the Panamera Turbo drops like a brick in the next couple of years.

I was surprised to read about the understeer in the m3, I wonder what a p31 c63amg would match up against the mustang.

I had the Continental Contact 3's on my wifes old car and they have a lot less grip than the PS2's.
