then my stock manual M3 must have at least 400 to the wheels from what it looked when I raced my friends 1M on the highway! In second gear it was really close, as soon as I hit 3rd, I started to pull easily and when I hit my 4th gear, it was a real massacre. I was even wondering if he letted go the throttle, but he assured me he was still WOT and we made the same race at least 3 other time right after that one, all with the same result! I must say I was happilly surprised with the result but that's what it was! So 330 to the wheels, I would be REALLY surprised! Last edited by Alex07M3; 07-10-2012 at 08:07 PM.. |

In sure the m3 puts down the pwr. I'm around 410 at the wheels w cat-less DPs. Since switched to catted so I'm sure there is some pwr loss. HP only gets you so far...handling is what's important to me, which is why I want an M3.

I am surprised that no one has mentioned about the wet sump system in 1M. 1M may track nearly as good as a M3, but engine longevity starts to go down the drain the moment you try to chase a real M. If you run r-comp tires, then your engine longevity will suffer even more. I was surprised that 1M is the only recent M car with a wet sump, this makes me question if BMW built it for track days.

It is a bit different, BMW marketing calls it semi dry sump. M3 semi-dry sump lubrication system with pressure and scavenging pumps to minimize oil starvation. Like the S54 engine, the oil is contained in a separate compartment in the bottom of the engine, separated from the crankshaft by a metal plate that prevents "windage" of the oil.

Why do people say the 1M isn't a real M car? It's RWD, relatively light-weight, manual only and isn't turbo. I've seen a couple in person and I'm impressed. When they drop to the high $40s/low $50s they'll definitely be worth it. However, at current prices I'd take an M3 for its glorious S65 engine and higher degree of practicality.

1M N54 engine has single pump #1 M3 S65 oil pan is baffled preventing oil from leaving the separate compartment in the bottom of the engine, so the pumps can suck up the oil even during high gforce. M3 S54 oil pan is the same. now take a look at 1M N54 oil pan, it is not baffled. the oil is NOT contained in a separate compartment in the bottom of the engine, separated from the crankshaft by a metal plate that prevents "windage" of the oil. Now tell me which one is really designed for track enthusiasts? Yes none of the M cars have true dry sump but at least the "semi dry" works well in protecting the engine.

Hey look , it's another m3 circle jerk thread
I feel sorry for a lot of y'all, unable to have respect or admiration for any car other than the one you own. I went from an m3 to a 1m and couldn't be happier because the 1m is a better match for me personally. And I track my car in south Texas and its tuned. Zero heat issues. But hey, don't let facts get in the way of your 1m bashing! Rock on m3post |

I'd love your opinion on the 1M as opposed to the E92 M3. I've been seriously considering switching as well. I drove a 1M once and boy it felt a lot lighter.

I like the fact that BMW has taken steps to reduce the oil starvation issue found on earlier models, but a dry sump it ain't. Not even close. Bruce |

Still, I doubt you track a sufficient number of miles to be able to forecast the engine longevity... What are your oil temps on track in the summer?

The 1M is a cool car but it is not a true M car... That being said buy the car you want and have fun...

Go drive one, and come back to report if you think it's a fraud. Frankly I'm more concerned that M hasn't produced any homologation specials in a very long time. Just mostly luxo barges with incresingly high prices and convenience features. It's not important what engine would power such a homologation special, as long as the intent and execution are crystal clear.
