I think I'll be doing the same... Replacing the engine or DCT would REALLY hurt.

I bought a warranty but now from rip-off BMW. I bought from an company specializing in extended warranties. You should have reduced the existing poll options and added some for these types of cases.

I didn't have those options when I bought my car, but it was in early 2008 when they were just starting to get them in.

They sold me an aftermarket warranty which has a $50 deductable. I think I paid 3K for it, coverseverything except maintenance, up to 6 years or 70K. I don't drive the car daily anymore so I probably won't hit the mileage expiration before the time lapses. The company was Zurich. I think an aftermarket warranty is a good idea because BMW just wants to get paid for the work, as opposed to paying for repairs out of their own pocket through BMW warranties. When the M3's first came out, there was no factory extention to the warranty that I think they offer now.

The warranty company I had I contract with for the Jaguar I had for a couple years was horrible. There was a clause in the paperwork that said "not responsible for consequential or incidental damage". The transmission went out in the car and they determined that a bearing failed which sent metal thoughout the transmission and torque converter runing everything. So they paid for that bearing and the labor to replace that bearing which was $1,500 or so, and I got stuck with the other $2,500. I hoping that this warranty sold to me at time of purchase affords a higher level of protection over the previous experience I had with an aftermarket warranty.

I know statistically the chances are it's not going to be me that gets a s65 blowup or a DCT malfunction, but a couple thousand is alot better than 20k for an s65 or 13k for a DCT. I think of it like my health insurance, I probably won't get critically injured but just in case.

I don't buy a car so I can pay someone else to work on it. For me, part of the joy and thrill of getting a new project car is well... making it a project. It'll be a learning experience of course, for example this will be my 1st car with ITB's, and there are a good amount of systems on the car I'm not entirely familiar with or have at least not dealt with on my own, but learning about them and gaining that knowledge is part of the fun (for me).

There are a good amount of resources out there, even though BMW tries to keep them on lock... It's ridic how hard you have to search to get a copy of the e92's shop/repair manual. Worth it though in the end.

A little bump. Back when I purchased my car in December of last year the dealership i bought it from (a toyota dealership) offered me a CostGuard warranty. I honestly didn't do much research but I believe it was around $2500 and it covers pretty much anything major that would happen to the car.

I didn't buy extended maintenance through BMW, but I DID pick up "Mechanical Breakdown" through Geico. It covers vehicles less than 15 months old with fewer than 15k miles. My price is $34.20 every 6 months. It covers everything except "wear and tear" like BMW for 7 years/100k miles, and with a $250 deductible. It has nothing but good reviews from customers.

I figured that the worst case is that I'd spend $479 for the seven years and not use it. The best case is that a new engine, etc. will cost at most $729.

I went with a 3rd party. It's a Mechanical Repair Warranty offered through my Credit Union. I was able to get the Platinum which covers just about everything including NAV, Radio, etc. for 4 years and 48,000 ADDITIONAL miles for $2387. The equivalent BMW Platinum warranty was $4000 + and was for 60 months. BMW didn't offer a less expensive option for a shorter timeframe or I might have stayed with them. I will probably sell the car within 3-4 years (for another M3 of course!) so I didn't need a 5 or 6 year warranty. Anyhow some say this is a sucker's bet but for $2300 it's great piece of mind.

I know the parts of the topic here may be been debated ad naseum. I'm not trying to debate the merits, I just want to know what package you actually bought out of pocket. Not what package was given to you from CPO Used car or extra warranty offered on your purchase or warranty work or anything unrelated.

I just bought a Platinum extended warranty through a buddy of mine at VW. The warranty is offered from Fidelity and the MSRP was around $10k. I paid $4,900. I'm covered for an additional 6 years and an additional 60,000 miles. That means I'm set through 2018 up to 113,500 miles. It covers more than other warranties I researched and has a $250 deductible. I look at it as purchasing an insurance policy in the event something major happens. If I average this out over the next 6 years, it around $68 a month for pure piece of mind. Still under factory warranty, but I didnt and wont be buying any extended warranty. I run and operate a import repair shop. Parts are cheap for me even oem once, labor is cheap. I either do it myself if I have time or run it through and make one of the tech do the job and pay only $25/hr (his rate)
