I had the pleasure of hearing this exhaust at bimmerfest and all i can say is wow! it sounds awesome. perfect for those who want louder than stock but not crazy loud. It also looks superb and has incredible build quality

There must be something loose in your exhaust, check if the clamps are tighten, no drone with this exhaust
There was another post where the OP reported a similar situation and when he took it back to shop they found a loose fitting

The service report stated that "the noise is found coming from the rear section of the exhaust, inside of muffler during load". They replaced it, and it is better, but I can still hear a difference in the character of the exhaust note at 4000rpm. I wonder if there is something wrong with the engine that is amplified by the exhaust as well.

Mine does the same thing in the 4000 rpm range when the exhaust is hot.I think it is a normal thing as the exhaust note outside the car also changes so it is not an issue with mounting or loose parts in the exhaust itself.I really do like the different tones that this exhaust gives off at different RPM & temps. And I really like the fact that there are no annoying drones in normal day to day use and long distance highway driving.

this was the thread I was referring to from a member in Germany, his drone was at 2000 RPM and he later found out that a fitting was loose but looks like this is not the case with your exhaust:

Problem with Performance exhaust: drone at 2.ooo rpm
Hi,

my dealer in Germany installed the performance exhaust last week on my e90 M.
I really like this exhaust, it has a very exotic sound at 3.500-4000 rpm.

They only problem which I have with this exhaust is, that it drones!
My e90 has DKG and I drive it very often in the automatic mode (going to work in the morning, etc).

At 2.000 rpm the exhaust really has a drone. it is really disturbing and reduces the fun which I have with this exhaust a lot.
The automatic mode also switches gears up as fast as possible, so the engine is very often below 2.000 rpm. If you now accelerate slighty, the automatic mode will not switch the gears down. Now I get the drone

Does anyone has the same?
I am wondering, because when I checked in this forum, everyone said, that the performance exhaust has no drone at all...

Another issue which I have detected is, that the performance exhaust expanse when it is warm.
I have the hahmann-diffusor installed on my e90. With cold exhaust the tips are behind the diffusor (around 1 cm) - you can not see the ///M-logo on the tips.
If the exhaust is warm, the tips come out of the diffusor around 2-3cm - now you can see the ///M-Logo.

Has anyone recognized this on his performance exhaust?

Thank you for you helb.

Best regards from Germany,
Michael

I'd go to your place, and gladly swap your exhaust with my stock one already painted ceramic flat black (except tips) . Seriously, that drone is totally unacceptable. And dealer should give you your stock exhaust back man; just ask them. Unless they charged you only the difference, that exhaust is yours. You can put it back and sell the other. But I'd make them check all bolts removed, especially if they removed the differential brackets, which has resulted in many broken differentials, so doesn't hurt to ask. If they're loose, they might be causing the drone; can't imagine them leaving the 2 exhaust clamps loose .

Please keep us posted, as if it really drones, I'd scratch it from a possible upgrade in the future. Take care, and good luck.

+1

I love my Perf exhaust. Nothing is better than being on the track and hitting the gas to power though the turn and hearing that hollow, guttural roar as I pass through the 4K RPM range.

I'm very happy with the M Performance Exhaust. So far no drone.

Put it this way. I had the BMW Performance exhaust on my 2006 330i and liked it so much I purchased my new car with the BMW Performance exhaust. I am 100% satisfied my my purchase. I originally did not like the price as others have noted but when it comes to BMW everything is overpriced. Not because it is better but because it is for a BMW. With my new exhaust the black paint did start peeling off after a few hundred miles inside the tips. I ended up and polished it all out with a dremel. It looks great and sounds awesome in my opinion.

This exhaust doesn't drone. Sorry. You either don't know what drone is or it was improperly installed (which is hard to do) and you have an exhaust leak or something.

I just replaced my full akra evo with the oem performance exhaust and I love it. I know the akra is loved on this forum (part of why I got it in the first place) but I thought it was too loud on a daily bases, pumped out too much smoke and the tips were too big and stuck out too far in my opinion.
The oem exhaust volume is in between the akra and the regular stock exhaust and I love the tips. I know the performance exhaust is expensive but it's BMW and to me it seems actually designed for it, not so after marketish...The only thing I miss is the torque and hp gain of the akra.

True. I probably jumped the gun a little. I went out for a spirited drive today and was not able to recreate the sound I was hearing.

I really do like the cold start and at idle the bass note sounds great. But of course this exhausts shines when you get on it.

I've had 9 different exhaust combos. M Performance is still the winner
have you compared with dinan and akra evo?

I am about to take the plunge with the Turner Test Pipes and BPM Stage II. Currently it's exotic and I hope the added mods will complement the exoticness of the car.

Agree on the 3800-4000 rpm resonance (and really depends on the gear), which has increased with age as exhaust/fiberglass in mufflers has worn in (I have about 15k miles on the exhaust). However, I would not characterize it as an annoying drone, but more resonance/harmonic like....actually think it sounds really awesome and can't be replicated by any exhaust I've heard so far...I've gotten numerous random compliments on it, even though M3s are a dime-a-dozen in CA. Despite offering no HP increase, other than a tune this has been my favorite aftermarket mod.

You are going with the TTPs with an MPE, or the stock modification?

I've had the MPE for a year and love it. Recently a loud resonance drone
with a metal rattle sound started at 3000-3100 rpm.
It seems that a weld has broken loose in the baffles of the muffler.
I took it in under warranty (2 years) and BMW service department has offered to replace it
Hopefully the next one holds up better over time...
