Pilot Sport Cups as a DD tire with occasional track use
I'm debating getting the Michelin Pilot Sport Cups but am seeing a lot of concerns with these tires and rain. These would predominately be a daily use tire for me with occasional track days but not dedicated to track use..
There is a sweet set for a great price for sale in the For Sale Forum which is the biggest reason for wanting to get these vs a traditional street tire Can anyone running these chime in? |

Pilot Sport Cups are serious overkill for a daily driver. Even if you drive spiritedly, it'll be pretty hard to use PSC to their potential on the streets and you'll go through the thread life in no time. I'd recommend going with the Pilot Super Sports. Much better in the rain, still has excellent dry grip and they will be fine for a light track duty.

Pilot Sport Cups are great as a track tire, or a spirited driving tire, but only in the dry. Pick them up for track events as they will be better than any street tire. But as Shizzle says, get some Pilot Super Sports, they are really the best all around tire out there!

Sport Cups have been done as street tires, but they are only for the brave. If they are BMW OE (star) or Porsche OE (N-spec) they will be 'detuned' a little to give slightly better wet traction than the original Sport Cup.
Expect very short treadlife in either case, likely 5-7K miles.

Thanks for the input guys..after thinking about it and given that it does rain quite a bit here in Houston I don't think these would be the best move for me..ended up ordered a set of Vred's instead!

If you don't daily your car and can avoid the rain then what the hell.
I for one will tell you though that even with a skim coating of water on the road you better be at the top of your game. I'd go PSS if your going to see any type of precipitation, that's the tires I plan on using for wet track events this year...

Sport Cups on the street are only for the truly lazy like myself. You have to be extra cautious in the rain or even on cool days. I left them on my e46 while it stayed at my brother's house only because I was too lazy to change back to my regular street tires. Nice to drive to the track with no spares, though; just arrive and drive. Of course I left the PF-01s on as well. Also, it was not my daily driver.

I would not buy these tires for DD usage.
They are incredible in the dry but very sketchy in the rain. On top of that, they are very expensive, and have extremely low tread wear. Great tire for track use, but not on the streets. |

Aren't Yoko AD08's grippier tires than the Super Sports (and better for track usage)? Seems like a better "in between" choice between Cups and Super Sports.

The Bridge RE-11 and Yoko AD08 both offer good grip at the track while keeping you on the road when Houston decides to wash you away.

Wasn't quite from Cups to Vred's..I was only considering the cups bc there was a set for sale that were practically new for CHEAP..my car is a DD and the Vred's seemed like a great bang for the buck tire.

I've DD'd cups for over a year and they are not any where near as scary as many claim. If you have a good understanding of your abbility and their capability in the wet, then you'll be fine. It's been raining a lot here in Houston and my current set are nearly bald, which means oppo on demand during my 6:30am drive to work. You just have to understand that in the wet or early morning cold, you can't go 10/10ths (but you're on the road so shouldn't be anyway). I've gone through two sets and had Nitto NT01s on the car before, and RE-11s before those. I like the Cups, but I'm considering a set of PSS to save about $400 and I haven't made it out to the track as much as I'd like to. Oh, and my car is my DD. Except for flooding or serious downpours, then I take the Jeep.

I got a set sideways so to speak as they were mounted on the wheels which were my real purchase. This was for a vette mind you but here in the Pacific Northwest they made a very poor daily driver tire. The wont put you in the ditch on their own hook like some people say but you have to take real care in the wet and around here there is plenty of that much of the year. Mine supposedly had about 1k miles when I got them and five and some change later they were toast. If I had it to do again I think I would have sold them while they still had good life in them and put on some PS2s or the like instead.

Overkill, but an appealing notion for a second set of factory wheels...
