Turbo Engines done right by MB

I saw this on the Road and Track Facebook wall and thought it was pretty cool.
They deconstructed a turbo so the turbine with exhaust gases are in the back of the engine while the compressor is up front via a shaft through the engine.

Hot gases stay in back away from the intake side.

But when you ask the same guy about tracking, "oh no, I have a kid now" or "I just detailed my car." or "i just got new tires."

I would think turning a shaft, just like a drive-shaft, adds rotational mass, robbing power from the turbine

It most likely does to some measurable quantity. But since it's exhaust gases driving the turbine it's all recaptured energy that would have been lost anyways.

I'm sure it's a thin and very light shaft, and it appears the pluses far outweigh the negatives. It would have been sweet if the F8x had a break through tech like this. There were rumors of 3 turbos, then and electric turbo and what was given to us was essentially an N54 with direct injection, valvtronic and cooling for a tuned N54. Not terrible but not ground breaking either... not to mention it sounds like a$$.

Cool video. Would it be possible for other manufacturers to copy these ideas for this year?

I believe F1 now limits the number of engines they can have in a season. I doubt they could manufacture an entirely new engine this season.
