That's not an AA air filter. It's an oem with an active autowerke sticker FYI. There's even a factory part number on it that's partially blacked out.

What if Active Autowerke modifies the OEM filter by removing the "carbon filters integrated inside the filter" and rebrands it?

The early cars use a filter with integrated charcoal filter and the euro models did not. The production split on the filters escapes me, but the newer filter fits right in as well. Thus the spacer that is installed on the end only that one to accommodate the difference in size. It probably was an early AA filter, but that's not something you can clean and reuse. Throw that away.

This was the old AA filter, I had one identical on my past E90 M3 with the decal on it and everything. AA switched to the green filters later.
