I used to have a 1994 968 coupe and I drove it through the winters. It was simply the best handeling car I have ever owned hands down. Perfect 50/50 weight distribution and very wide front track. As a track rat, I'm sure Gearhead999 has seen them or even driven them at the track. Amazing track cars.

Hi!
to you guys driving a convertible in the winter, how does the M3 "feel"? i've read above that it's a good car with winter tires, what about the top? being a hardtop, i cant see much of a difference vs. the coupe... also, something that bothers me in my soft-top right now: can you operate the top below 0 C? it might sound crazy to some of you, but for me there's nothing like a open-air ride on a bright sunny winter day... not talking -20C obviously, but down to -5 or so, it's a great feel... my soft-top does not operate below 0 C (to protect the fabric from cracking), that means it wont open NOR close... (like, you start at +3C and by the time you get home it's - 3C, the top is stuck open!) any input on that? Thanks! |

Well, this past winter I tried opening my top at an indoor car wash, it was about -10 outside. I wanted to open it because it makes for a much easier interior detail without the roof over your back. And it wouldn't open, I was down the street from a BMW dealer, and I went in and asked why it doesn't work. A salesman told me the top won't operate if its too cold, to protect the seals and other moving parts of the roof. But I dont know exactly how cold it has to be for it not to work.

God bless those breasts!!!! Getting back on topic. I wouldn't dream of having my baby touch salt or snow. That's what a beater is for. My reccomendation. Cadillac Escalade!!!!

unfortunately i cant afford a toy car AND a beater... well, i'm lucky enough to have a truck that's all being paid for for my job, so the car only sees snow on weekends... or in the mountains...

However, I do regularly drive with the top down in the winter, both with the M3 now and my old soft top. For years I would put down the top at least once every month in the winter, and a few times I have been know to drive with hat, gloves, ski jacket and the heat blasted to full with the heated seats on. I have never had the problem of the roof not opening or closing at any temperature, and for sure I have had it out below zero. I may not have tried it below -10 as I always start and end in a garage, but this is the first I have heard that it will not operate below a certain temperature. Guess it is time to

not sure about the M3, but my top does not open for sure if the temp display anything below 0 C... hell, even 0 C even and you're stuck... now, going topless with the top down at -10 C might be pushing it... thanks for your replies guys! Pat |

drive my car year round... i am sorry but for those of you that think the m3 is some kind of supercar that has to be stored for winter, i think thats stupid... the reason you buy an m3 is cos it has decent performance with everyday driving capability... i've seen so many people in their S-class mercs and 7 series BMWs drive through winter. and those cars are more expensive than the m3. so i dont understand why you'd need to store it. its not like its a lambo or a ferrari.
here's some pics of my car driving in winter... the awesome thing bout the m3 is that i can go to work with it, track the car, drive it through snow and rain, take long road trips, load a lot of luggage in it and it'll just soak it all up.
