I hear you - I feel like I'm at the limit of daily driver usability with this compact spare in the trunk. If it were any bigger, I'd be flipping down the rear seats often, just to get the groceries home. As it is, I have just enough space with the compact spare.

But man, these Maxis tires stink! As in fresh rubber smell. It's not going away, either. Phew.

Search bavauto.com for "spare tire bag." It's an OEM bag and seems to have latches that hook up to the loops in the trunk. It might keep the smell in too:

I would also like to suggest to add a rubber mallet, which might come in handy for those who keep a rim/tire, a low pro jack, a breaker bar/ 17mm socket in the trunk. It might be needed to loosen the wheel, when it is "stuck" to the wheel hub.

Last Monday I was driving home late at night with two out-of-town guests and one of my children in the car. And it was raining and the middle of nowhere, when I got a pinch flat.

Thanks to my trusty spare, cheap jack, breaker bar with a 17mm socket, and one flare, we were back on the road in 10 minutes.

And thanks to my BMW Wheel & Tire protection plan, that's the second tire I've replaced for $50 in 7 months.

I don't have it or a compact spare yet, but I highly doubt it. From its description and just eyeballing its width-to-height ratio, it looks like it's only for compact spares.

Not sure why everyone is having problems with getting the Maxxis 145 size temporary spare....I ordered it from their web site monday, arrived yesterday.....$145.....

Am I missing something here?

A lot of our customers who buy the spare use simple straps that you can find at home depot to tie it down (dont use netting or loose cords)

I just got a used 2012 E92 M3 coupe with competition package. It has the OEM 19 inch wheels with 245/35F and 265\35 R tires with the cross drill brakes.

I'm looking to get a spare tire and separately a BMW mini jack to keep at all times in the trunk. I don't like the idea of driving anywhere without a spare tire. I had two flat tires on the road in the past 15 years; one sideway hole and a center hole puncture. So my questions are:


Is GregW / Oregon 's original post ( http://www.m3post.com/forums/showthr...ght=spare+tire ) still valid or is there an easiar to assemble or kit option available now? On his post it mentioned that I will need 4 items(BMW steel wheel, rubber valve stems, centering, and Maxxis tire). 3 of the items, can be found online in but on the center ring,

It looks like the Maxxis spare tire price has gone up to $149 a piece.

Also, should a neighborhood tire repair place be able to assemble these 4 pieces together for me, test by fitting it on a wheeel and make sure it has clearance against the brake assembly. Thanks.

I did this using a Prielli 135 80 18 from Tire Rack,$100 plus shipping. I believe this size gave me the best match for the rear wheels and didn't hit anywhere front or rear. The centering ring was also from Tire Rack but make sure of the shipping before you order and get several they are cheap and may get destroyed while checking wheel fit. Valve stems can be gotten anywhere but maybe Tire Rack can ship with the rings.

I can't remember where I got bought the wheel but I think it was an advertiser here. The jack is from a E46 and I got it from a good BMW junk yard.

I haven't needed to use the spare but it does seem to fit.

PS my car is also a E92 with ZCP.

Revisiting this since my original post. The last kit I put together was in 8/14 for my F82. Same Maxxis T145/70 tire RH512 linked to; cost me $260 total at the time, so you need to judge whether the $335 price preassembled is worth the convenience (I think it might be).

Your stock tires are 25.7" & 26.3" OD. The 145/70 is 25.0; it works but the 135/80 White 13 mentions is closer at about 25.5" and also skinnier, meaning takes up less trunk room, and less expensive. I think that's the way to go. It's not listed on the Tire Rack site but if you call them they can probably find it.

One little trick on the plastic centering rings is to silicone glue them in place - helps avoid them coming off or getting broken as you mount the wheel.

Thanks everyone. If I get the 4 pieces(including the Perilli tire at Tirerack), it should cost a total of about $240-$250 with labor to assemble.

I like the idea of the Bimmerzone spare tire kit pre-assembled too. I'm not too picky about either option, I just need a spare.

By the way, regular tires usually come with an expiration date like 5 years. If I never use my spare tire for that long, am I suppose to also replace it due to the age?

Rubber will gradually harden with age, but I would for strictly emergency use at low (55 mph max) speeds that the temporary spare should have a much longer useful life. Helps if you store it out of daylight, as well.

TireRack ran out of the Pirelli today and it would be a few months wait for backorder.
I ended up switching to the Yokohama Y870C which is size T145/70D 18, a few left in stock and I was told it is 25.99 inch diameter; which would be close to Greg OP noted tire. I think that should work also.

My information shows the 135/ 80 r18 at about 26.5 inches, instead of 25.5, which would be just a little bigger that the stock rear tires. And I am running 275/35 r 19 which should be about 26.58 so it should be pretty close.

But, I don't think ether would be a problem just for something to get home with.

I thought I thank everyone for their help by posting the picture of the completed spare tire; with the Yokohoma. It came in on budget, weights 35 lbs on the scale, and it was 26.0 inch in diameter overall. I also had the tire shop tested the spare by swapping it into the passenger front wheel well and spinning the spare tire kit without seeing any obstructions. This item completes the last essential item with buying this car recently.

Also, I've ordered a tire tote and Ratchet ropes so it can stay tied in the trunk.
Another 10lb for the BMW mobile jack kit. Overall, that is another 45lbs to carry around for safety. I'm almost wondering whether I should only carry them when I'm traveling out of town? Then it's on to something else(always) with the car..

I am scrambling currently to put together a spare tire as I had a blowout on one of my rear tires on Saturday. As most businesses were closed, I had to tow it to a location and will have the new tires(will be replacing both rears) installed today. Having been inconvenienced for the 3rd time due to a flat tire(7 years of ownership), I think it's time for me to do something(should have done so after the FIRST flat). It is a total joke that this car doesn't come with a spare. The flat tire repair kit is useless as holes on the sidewall can't be fixed 99% of the time(I've actually fixed a small tear with a patch kit once and got to safety). This time was a little different as I didn't hit a pothole. The rear tire just blew up. I'm wondering if there was something I didn't do as a responsible owner that lead to this. The weather is pretty hot in ATL area and I haven't checked the pressure in awhile. Overinflation could be the culprit for my demise. I do have another set of tires w/ winter tires on them. Wondering if carrying one of the fronts would solve the problem or go with the space saving spare. Looks like everything can be put together for under $250.
