Exclamation Stock E92 335i (Step) vs. Stock E46 M3 (Manual) Who will win?

Who would win the race? (from a stop and from a 40~ roll)

-2006 Manual E46 M3 completely stock with Competition Package (Not sure if the Competition Package makes a difference)
-2007 Steptronic E92 335i completely stock

I did a search and didn't come up with any good information.

There are few vids on youtube and clearly E46 M3 is a faster car. First two gears they are even, after that M3 start pulling away. So even old M3 is mighty fast.

If you cared about that your an idiot for buying a German car instead of some American straight line monster. And if you care about corners shame on you for not buying an M3.

Ps. Doesnt the Comp. package only come with the paddles?
Why are you being so insulting? I asked a simple question because I am curious. And trust me, if I could have had an M3 instead of a 335 I sure would have taken it.

Stock vs stock, I have seen this race multiple times and the E46 M3 pull aways after the 2nd gear especially over 100 mph the top end grunt of the E46 M3 really dominates. The are close in a 0-60 match.

I would love to have the E46 M3 ZCP even if it will be slower once the 335 is modded (ofcourse, if the E46 M3 does not have HPF turbokit). Such a beautiful car.

Actually, everybody cares about a straight line - you included. All other things equal, a car that accelerates more easily is better than a car that doesn't - even in the twisty bits.

Complete nonsense on several fronts. The Germans have been going power mad for a number of years now, and of course it's not as if we're talking about an either/or proposition here. Furthermore, cars like the CTS-V, G8, even the new Mustang show that they are just as friendly in the twisties as on the straights. That old axiom about American cars is on its last legs.

Finally, the M3 is far, far away from being the ne plus ultra of track (or even overall handling) cars. It's way too big and heavy to wear that mantle. Yeah, it's better than the 335 in that venue, but the 335 is no slouch either.

Oh yeah. The cars tend to run even up in the quarter mile, with the M3 showing slightly better trap speeds. The 335 is quicker at the low end because of the torque advantage (plus its underrating), but the M3 begins to reel it in, catching it at the quarter mile and then just motoring away. From 40 mph, my bet is that the cars will be very close to even for a bit before the M3 begins to make its move.

Bruce

PS - It's not as if I keep a ledger sheet on everyone's posts, but my overall impression of you is that you keep your head more aften than not and tend to add value.

What happened?

I've run my my Z4M (roadster) against my brother's 335i step and it's a bit faster even from a stop to 60 and then pulls strongly on it above 80 mph. Z4M is unofficially quicker than an E46 M3, but not by much. The biggest difference is that you have to work the S54 to get it to be fast, if you drive it lazily it will not be fast.

Edmunds did the test vs. the Competition M3.

Our freshly minted 3 Series twin-turbo coupe has not only eclipsed BMW's own impressive performance figures — by a ton — it's also smoked those of the 2005 BMW M3 Competition Package.... "Consider the facts: This 2007 BMW 335i test car blazed from zero to 60 in 4.8 seconds, scalded the quarter-mile in 13.3 seconds at 105.9 mph. For comparison, our 2005 M3 Competition Package used up 5.5 seconds getting to 60 and finished the quarter-mile in 13.7 seconds at 105.4 mph — close, but still a rearview-mirror performance. We almost beat the all-powerful 2007 Audi RS4 too, Despite a 120-horsepower advantage and all-wheel-drive launch superiority, it just nicked our 335i's 0-60 and quarter-mile times by a paltry 0.1 second each.

If you've been bemoaning the lack of a BMW M3 sedan in BMW's current model line, this car is as close to one as you can get. In fact, this 335i sedan beat the last 333-hp 2005 M3 Competition Package we tested in every measurable way.

It danced away from the M-spec two-door in the run to 60 mph by a half-second, stopped from 60 mph 1 foot shorter, and raced through the slalom 2 mph quicker. Since we pronounced the $55,840 M3 "The Best M3 Ever Sold in America," what does this make the $44,270 335i?

Problem was, the E46 M3 was a long-term test fleet car that sustained a lot of abuse and was 3 years old while the 335 was brand new.

If you put a low-mileage E46 M3 with proper usage, it will beat the 335 stock for stock. Around a race track, the competition package should win by a big margin.

Even after that, I have high doubts about their neutrality when they claim the 335 beat the RS4 times. That is completely bullsh*t since a properly driven RS4 should destroy the stock 335 by a good margin whether it is straight line or around a race track.
