Dumb DCT question

So I'm sure this is a dumb question but...

How do you rev the engine if you have a DCT?

My old 550 had full exhaust and sounded glorious, but I always lamented that I couldn't rev the engine to hear it unless I was sitting still and in neutral.

Naturally that was a big reason why I opted for the stick again in my M3. Now that I'm older I don't rev to be obnoxious, but often just to say 'hi' to another M3 beside me while on the road.

If you pull back both paddles (kinda how you engage neutral in sequential Ferraris), it allows a DCT car to freely rev. Once you release, it changes right back into the gear you were in last, which is likely 1st. So all you have to do is pull both paddles and push on the gas pedal. Perfect for when you want to say hi to another M3.

LIES. LIES! LIES!!!

You tap the stick to the left for N, rev it and tap the stick once back to the right for it to go back into 7TH. No matter what gear you were in before the rev, it will go back into 7th every time.

OP: Just downshift in manual mode and the rev-match will work fine for your purposes

In all seriousness I think he is looking to rev while stopped at a light. A la Corvette and Mustang owners.

in which case....

The DCT programming is smarter than this question, that's why it won't let you rev it....

+1, or he can still throw it in neutral.

Serious response. The only way to rev is be in neutral or park. The only way to rev while moving is disengage transmission from engine flywheel aka put it in neutral. You can easily get back into gear if you do it while moving. Whether it's safe to be moving and not be connected to the engine is up to the driver to decide.

you can go out of DCT manual mode into neutral and back all you want. The transmission is smart enough to put it back into 7th gear no matter what gear you were in before.

So if you were in say 4th; went into neutral to jersey fist pump some hooker in the corner while throwing a quick rev at her and back into "gear" persay. It will go back into 7th instead of whatever gear you were in.

Not sure how full auto mode does it, as I never once used "D" mode in mine. But Im sure its no different.

I only WISH both paddles pulled back did neutral and when let go, would engage the clutches again. That way you could "pop the clutch" so to speak at your will.

I bought a 6MT because DCT got boring and one thing that always bothered me was no double handle pull back neutral.

stop trolling.....

bmw engineers when designing the car already knew this generation of owners would be different from the past. Thus why they put in devices such as "the safety belt handy over stick", "auto seats", and the "roar function" which is what I believe the OP is looking for.

lets say you are driving at 60km/h and you see another e92 beside you. Put the DCT into R to engage the Roar Function, which at speed stands for "Roar" instead of "Reverse". Then the car would freely rev for exactly 3 times before disengaging back to drive. So op next time you see another M3 on the road, open the door, get on the floor, everybody walk the dinosaur.

Came here to post this, glad to see its been done. But man, I wish we could get that implemented in our DCT's... would make drifting shenanigans so much easier through tight corners.

It would be a cool option, but probably lead to many burned clutches

I didn't even know the new GT3 does that. I just remember that when I was in college, my ex's dad who was hell bent on me driving all his exotics told me to go drive his 575M while he was out of town. So I obliged. I had to get the manual out to figure out that effing transmission. That's the only reason I know why any cars have that feature.
