Long Island Winter Tire Advice??
What do you guys like?
just picked up a set of OEM 18" wheels to mount a winter setup on. The stock tires PS2's are only good above 40 degrees and become rock hard when the weather is cold. I never drive my car in the snow, since I have a truck also. So I'm not sure I need a snow tire. But I need something good for the typical LI freezing rain we get all winter. Or for the emergency time I get stuck out somewhere for the night and it starts to lightly snow before I can get home. Is an all season tire good enough for the conditions we get around here? Or should I just go for an all out winter tire and hope we don't have a lot of warm sunny days where it's performance lacks and the tread will wear right down? thanks in advance

Ive heard good things about Pirelli Sottozero for winter performance or Bridgestone Blizzaks for full blown winter.

Pirelli Sottozero seems like a good all season choice. I think if you don't track your car and you don't race aggressively then you should be good with the all season. They don't perform as well as the full snow tires but they are still good for snow and the summer. I am thinking about going this route too.

I just got the Pirelli Scottozero Winter 240s. They are a snow tire, but more performance oriented and less snow oriented than the Blizzaks. I figured the all seasons are just a compromise of everything.

My fathers C63 has Pirelli Sottozero 240's. These are my favorite tire because they are performance oriented. Meaning, theirs no shaking at whatever speed you go. They are for light snow though, so heavy winter m3's, go with something else. Great tire.
My M3 has Blizzaks. These are the best snow tire you can get in my opinion, they have superior traction in heavy snow. The only downfall is that they shake at above 70mph, it is really annoying. My moms s550 4matic has dunlop winter sports, same size all around, these tires performe similar to her sportcontact 2's. You can literally use these tires year round, same deal goes for the sottozeros. CHoooose your tire! sottozero is my choice.

Most do. I ordered mine at my local tire shop... I think they just buy from Tire Rack. But it's better to have them order in case there's a problem. They had to get me new fronts cause one was a bad tire. Glad I didn't have to handle that warranty issue on my own.

I am still running summer tires lol. I never had winter or all season tires in my driving life... I still have to wait for a couple of weeks before I can get a set of all season tires. My new wheels are being built

All seasons are just a big compromise, they aren't good when it's warm and not really good in snow.
My tires were about $1,200 and that includes mounting and balancing.
