confirmed - which tire/wheel combo weighs more - 18 or 19!!!

19 tire plus wheel
Front: 47.0
Rear: 51.5

18 tire plus wheel
49.05 Front
52.10 Rear

overall for 4 tires and wheels the 18's weigh 4.3 pounds more. pretty dam close I would say.

thanks to GregOregon and badfish.

thanks, that's interesting since about a month ago most people were saying the 19" were heavier.

at least the 18" are not that much heavier.

Those are quite a bit lighter than the ZSP wheels on the E90 Sedan (Style 162 18") with RFTs. The M3 wheels are lighter than I expected, but still quite heavy in comparison to other forged wheels from Volk, BBS, etc.

18" Style 162 with Bridgestone Potenza RFTs (225/40-18 F & 255/35-18 R)
54.5 lbs Front (+5.45 over M3 18")
58.0 lbs Rear (+5.9 over M3 18")

Tire Rack says the Bridgestone front tire weighs 25 lbs and the rear tire weighs 26 lbs. This is an estimated "net weight" of 29.5 lbs for the front 162 and 32 lbs for the rear 162. Damn those stocker cast wheels are HEAVY!!

For the PS2s, they indicate fronts are 24 lbs and rears are 27 lbs for the 18" tires. That is an estimated "net weight" for the 260's of 25 lbs for the front and 25.1 lbs for the rear.

Interestingly enough, Tire Rack lists the 19" rear tire as 2 lbs lighter than the 18" rear tire. Both front tires are listed at 24 lbs. Using those figures, the 220's net weights are 23 lbs. Front and 26.5 lbs Rear.

RFT are always heavier due to the stiff sidewalls.

even so if it is (which I doubt) it doesnt really matter - what matters is the wieght of both the tire and wheel - unless you plan to drive on bare wheels!!!!

having a heavy tire on a light wheel is worse than having a light tire on a heavy wheel if they were both the same wieght.

I think with numbers this close, the weight comparison is a nonissue. People need to go with what they like and use whatever other criteria they have to make a decision. If there was 4 or more lbs. per assembly difference, then you could start to think about it. Personally, I will only go with forged wheels because they will hold up over the long haul.

x2.

except being a track junkie I like that the 19's have 4 #'s less unsprung and rotating mass.

I went with the 19's - merely cause I thought they looked better. and I like the idea they are forged.

I agree that 1 pound per tire/wheel does not mean anything.

I disagree that you say forged will hold up over the long haul. IMO that's nonsense. Cast wheels can be as strong as forged and 18" with more sidewall should be more easy on the wheels and likely to hold up better.

I went with the 18" because I likes them both, I was spending money on DCT, Tech + premium package + premium sound + ipod/sat radio. I went with 18" to save some money also I didn't go with park assist or heated seats for the same reason.

I usually buy a second set of wheels + winter tires and the $1200 I saved will pay for an extra set of wheels.

More precisely, I should have said with wheels of comparable weight, the forged should normally be stronger and more resistant to damage. Forging, properly done, in inherently stronger than casting.

I know, but the point is larger wheels have less protection so it's better (forged) but worse (lower profile) at the same time.

I ran 30 Series on my E46 for 3 1/2 years on forged with coilovers and never had an issue, despite many pothole/bump encounters. 35s should be no sweat.

Rai you're planning to get snow tires? Which part of MD are you from, last year I remember only had one day of significant snow fall, which I drove my PS2's though very carefully but got home safely. I would consider michelin's pilot A/S if you are worried about light snow, dedicated snow tires are a waste in our area.

I usually buy Dunlop Wintersport (if they make for this size) I can't be happier. I don't even mean about snow, but in cold tempreture, summer tires become hard and don't grip at all.

I have the wintersport for several of my cars and especially for my S2000. I don't regret spending money on tires and the best way is to have a spare set of wheels to mount them on. I keep the 'winter' tires on november to april.

these are so-called performance snow tires (winter tires), not as good as true snow-ice tires in snow but not bad, but they really don't feel like snow tires in normal conditions, I mean they don't feel swqishy (unless it's really getting warm out like in the 70s).

IMO AS are what I'd call no season because they are not as good as summer tires (most times) and not as good as winter tires in the winter. I don't want to give up summer tires feel by putting AS tires on my car and winter performance tires are better than AS tires in snow as well as cold conditions.

Quote:
Dunlop SP Winter Sport M3 are Performance Winter tires that were developed to blend dry road performance with snow traction. They are sized for sports cars, coupes and sedans that come from the factory equipped with low profile tires mounted on large diameter alloy wheels and are engineered to deliver performance and traction whether the road is snow-covered or not.

Winter Sport M3 feature a silica based tread compound that remains pliable in cold temperatures. Using Dunlop V-Technology, this compound is molded into a directional tread design that helps maintain good traction on wet and slush-covered roads while its high-density lateral zigzag sipes and independent tread blocks provide the edges to help bite into snow.

My only concern is the wear rate of the performance winter tires. I was suggesting you use the Pilot A/S as your cold weather tire and not sacrafice wear, road noise and some dry weather performance.
