If you get new tires that are going on your existing OEM wheels, you do not need TPMS. You simply keep them on there.

If you're getting new wheels and tires, then you should pick up a new set of TPMS.

You can reuse your old TPMS modules...but there is a possibility of DRAMA with these finicky little devices.

That's why I always recommend that you leave your stock TPMS modules inside your OEM wheels, and buy a new set for your aftermarket wheels.

Mounting and dismounting tires and wheels to take off your factory TPMS modules (to move them to another set of wheels) is not worth the headache and/or potential damage that my result.

Just buy brand new TPMS modules for your new wheels...and call it a day.

How often do the TPMS need to be changed out when installing new tires on OEM wheels?

The person at three local tire places told me they need to switch out my TPMS for new ones that they sell, they are not OEM tpms tho. They told me every time you change out tires the TPMS are likely to fail. The old ones need to be taken out and new ones put in because they get dirty and need to be cleaned.

The TPMS modules inside your OEM wheels will typically last between 5-7 years. (maybe longer if you are lucky)

Your shop was feeding you some bad info when they suggested you buy their TPMS modules over the stock TPMS modules.

NEVER buy TPMS modules that are not exact OEM replacements.

The TPMS reciever in your car is CALIBRATED (and coded) to work with the OEM TPMS transmitters inside your wheels.

Attempting to use an aftermarket TPMS module (that isn't properly coded) will not work.

In other words...the shop was trying to make some money off you. (by feeding you that crap)

There is a grain of truth to what they said about replaceing the TPMS modules though...

Trying to re-use old TPMS modules (off the factory OEM wheels) can sometimes lead to TPMS failures. They are pretty fragile, and many tires shops are not careful when these are un-installed. (resulting in some damage to the unit)

That's why I said they should be left alone, and new TPMS modules purchased for the new wheels.

It's more expensive, but it's a lot less hassle in the long run.

What about the valve stem? Does that need to be replaced?

Correct, make sure they leave it alone.

Also make sure to tell them you have TPMS sensors inside your wheels.

It reduces the chances they will damage the TPMS unit during the tire removal phase, since they will be looking out for it. (before they start the process)

Not all OEM wheels have TPMS sensors, so don't assume the shop will know this little detail...

No valve stem replacement should be necessary if it's metal. (unless you have noticed a slow air leak from the valve stem itself)

OK, so it's looking like I may be screwed. I bought a set of TPMS sensors from a Canadian guy who bought a set of OEM 19s from a US guy. He didn't need the TPMS, so he removed them and offered them for sale.

They look completely new and unblemished, and the valve necks are present, but the dill valves are not there. Are you saying, these are not likely to work?
