It is DEFINITELY long over due. BMW short changed all the loyal bmw enthusiasts/purist when they released both the M5 and the m6 in SMG only.
SMG reviews for m cars have not been completely favourable.
will manual cars be restricted to LHD cars only?

Awesome.

No MT is something you'd expect from Mercedes, glad to see BMW has seen the light.

is SMG to blame for this 3rd place rating in the executive super saloon fight?

check this shocking link-http://www.automobilemag.com/reviews/sedans/0607_2007_supersedans/index.html

THE RANKINGS

THIRD PLACE - BMW M5

A class master for many years, the BMW M5 has finally met its match. It's the M5's transmission that pushes the car down the rankings. SMG is wonderful for a track day, but it's a drag during the rest of the week. It's a shame, because the rest of the car is still dynamically spot-on. For instance, it's hard to imagine more communicative steering than the BMW's. The brakes also do a splendid job, although directional stability at very high speeds could be better and the ride comfort is acceptable only in comfort mode. As it happens, comfort mode provides the kind of suspension compliance that makes the car handle in a particularly creamy and predictable manner. At the limit, the M5 will instinctively attempt to oversteer. That's the good news. The bad news is that the car always goes through a phase of initial understeer before the tail commences its side step, so every extra square inch of tarmac helps, as does plenty of confidence.

So, the M5, at $81,895, comes in last, mostly due to SMG. Having said that, the six-speed manual transmission, which will be offered in the U.S. market later this year, may alter this ranking. But as it is, the ballsy BMW is too crude, too complicated, and too compromised to emerge as the best of this bunch.

A lot of drivers and the same article below- have also commented that the new e60 m5 is too complex to drive with idrive, hope m3 e92 will be less complicated and easier to drive like a proper sports car.

' Inside, the M5 is somewhat stark, albeit at a high level. In addition to the love-it-or-hate-it iDrive, the quickest sedan from the Bavarian Motor Works offers a bewildering selection of setups. First, you must decide whether to change gears manually or automatically. That's an easy choice: in auto, the seven-speed SMG gearbox is still either unacceptably jerky or unacceptably slow. Second, you have to choose between 400 and 500 hp. Why? God only knows, but we suspect the engine always starts in four-fifths mode to curb its fuel consumption. Decisions three and four concern the shift speed (six to choose from) and the damper setting (three to choose from). What's next? Switch off stability control, or start fretting with iDrive? In total, there are twenty different settings that allow almost countless permutations. No, we didn't try them all. But we grew to like the combination of P500 (500 hp), M Dynamic Mode (heightened stability-control thresholds), EDC in normal damping mode, and S4 (fourth-fastest shift speed). You'll want to store your preferred mix and access it via the M button on the steering wheel.'

I hope you're right about that. Seems to me that the 7sp SMG-III was specifically tuned/engineered to be mated to the motor, with the optimal spacing of the gear ratios and everything else. I wonder what the gearing will be like with a 6mt version? BMW is obviously just doing this to placate a fairly vocal minority of people here in the USA. I wonder what the driving experience will be like? Will BMW just say: "We _told_ you that the SMG was the optimal transmission, but you just _had_ to have a manual. Be careful what you wish for."

who really cares??? when it was offerred only with SMG everone still loved the car. Now that it's offerred with 6MT, is the car that much better?

As if the fact that it wasn't offerred with 6MT was holding so many people back from buying it..........I'm curious to see how many "it's about time" posters go and cop one now.

M5 = SICK ride, period.

i kinda agree, i mean its a very good addition to have the 6MT (lucky americans!!), but that doesnt mean that the M5 is a BAD car because of its SMG, iv seen many TV shows, read many articles which say that the M5 is the GOD of cars, no matter what tranny it has, its still one of the best rides out there

guess what, its a 3 series forum and everyone is just drooling.

all people can do is complaining. I bet all of them will take the M5 if someone offered them M5 SMG or E90 6MT.

100% with u
the SMG isnt that bad, its still better than step.

also people were all talking how good is the M5 performance with the SMG
but the 6MT have some sort of "magical" touch

What is it about Mercedes auto tranny that makes it so much more superb than the SMG. I have heard that transmission is wonderful and very clever in its shifting.

From my own adventures and various opinionfs from owners, is that the SMG, being a totally different and new way of driving a car for most, is just like any other car that you are not familiar with. It takes getting used to. The jerky shifts tend to go away after a bit and you become more smoother.

Just take a look at the iDrive. At first it looks and sounds rediculous, but after learning to use it, becomes almost a godsend.
