M3 vs M5 vs M3 vs 550i

So I finally had an opportunity to do a friendly "drag race" with a few buddies of mine.

We did a few 0-80ish pulls,

E90 M3-MDCT vs E60 M5-SMG
E90 M3-MDCT vs E46 M3 6-SPEED

I did three runs with the E60 M5-SMG in my M3-DCT and my gosh, i'm so surprised I pulled over 1-2 car lengths away from the M5 and kept pulling, once I hit 2nd gear that thing was already in my rear view!

I gave the E46 M3 a 2 car length head start, still killed it.

The E46 M3 and the E60 550i had similar power, the E46 had a great jump, but over like 40mph the 550i pulled ahead of the E46 M

I'm surprised, the E46 M3 is the slowest of all four!

I can see the e90/92 m3 keeping up with the m5 up until 100, and then the m5 should be able to pull away. The m5 really moves when you start to enter ridiculous speeds

It is still a big cumbersome beast......... I love it, to look at, not to own

Wow, I'm surprised that the M3 actually beat the M5, but I agree with the poster above that once you enter the triple digits the power/torque of the M5 will take over.

I'm a little confused though. You spoke of an E60 M5, but then talked about an E60 550i later on. Which car was in the "race"? Was it an M5 or a 550i? Or was the 550i just another car you mentioned later on, not related to the "race"?

it was really from 0-80

All this had been done. The variability was in driver reaction times and shifting and the actual car used.

both. did a few runs with all four cars, E90 M3, E46 M3, E60 M5, E60 550i.

I do agree, I think the V-10 will kick a$$ once it hits over 100. But I was REALLY surprised how far away and fast the M3 can pull away from the M5

I had a similar experience with an E60 M5 and he was quite surprised as well. I was pleased! My buddy also had an E46 m3 that was lightened with tune and although was at least 5 car lengths back pretty much of the time was able to retain the length at will...not bad. The 550 is also a beast...love that car.

My 2007 E60 M5 (SMG) lease was up recently, and I did not want to get the same car again (as awesome as it was) so I got myself a CPO 2009 E92 M3 with DCT to hold me over until F10 M5 is avail, or maybe the M3 will grow on me.

I have to say, on the highway the M3 to me feels like it has nooooo power after driving the e60 M5 for 3 years (and E39 M5 three years before that), when I put the pedal down it just revs like hell before I start to feel some power, so disappointing. So I can agree with some of the other comments here, maybe the M3 is faster during the initial 0-100KM (it still feels slower to me than the m5) , but after that I feel the M5 would blow the doors off the M3 at any speed under any circumstance.

side note, my friend had an E46 M3 SMG, and it was a joke in comparison to the E60 M5, at any speed.

No stock M3 is faster than the e60 M5 in a straight line unless you do something uninteresting like only go through 1st & 2nd gear. If the "race" only went to 80 then you didn't even find the top of 3rd gear in either car.

This is more like what the results should be like in a race with decent speeds. Uhm, notice what happens in 3rd gear and up.

Ha. Ha.

Fanboys.

The only person who can state with any authority, is gracious enough to yield the first 50mph to the M3. He's owned both and speaks from experience. The M5 is much faster at anything other than off the line.

Why is this so hard to accept?

just dont be too serious...just all about driving skills...They(BMW) will never let a M3 faster than a M5 just like a 335 will never faster than a M3.people have diffrent DRIVING SKILLS!!

Yes this part is not appreciated frequently enough. I've had a few runs against Z06's and won, but I don't pretend for a second that my car is faster. From a dig what happens is they get all excited with the throttle and lose traction off the line, then again on the shift into second, and while all along I simply pulled ahead nicely until they really start to catch up in 3rd (then I end it, lol). A few times from a roll it seemed obvious that they were in the wrong gear. The ones I encountered could not drive.
