Thoughts on a E92 2008 DCT M3

Just want to get everyone's thoughts on purchasing the first year model E92 2008 DCT M3.

Personally, I do not care for the i-drive system so avoid talking about that. The main thing I would like people to discuss is if there are any issues as far as the engine. I have read over some issues but also found out they have been resolved after performing a software update from the dealer.

Another thing is if you guys recommend purchasing from a BMW dealer or if it really does not matter. I know BMW dealers can make it CPO'd but then they raise the price tag on the car a bunch. Currently I am looking at one from a Porsche dealer and it has a year of warranty left. Would I be able to extend the warranty considering it is currently under warranty? Or is there a possibility BMW will not extend it?

Overall, is it worth saving the money and getting a 2008 or spend a little extra and find an 09? I am looking no higher than a $45k price tag.

No worries on getting an 08, but here are some things to consider:

1) Get the car's service records from a BMW dealer to see if any major engine work was done. A potential red flag is any work on main bearings. Stay away if there is anything like this on the service records

2) You can purchase an extended warranty through BMW with no issues. There are a number of different options based on your budget.

Do BMW dealers charge to get service records?

Also, do I have to bring the car to the dealer or can I just give them the VIN number over the phone or something?

Can you buy an extended warranty after owning the car for a few years?

To clarify: I have an 08 M3 that I bought new. The car will drop out of warranty (on miles) in about 6 months (I have another year left on time).

Coming up on 50k on my 08 with no major issues. Keeping the car long term without extended warranty and driving as DD/track duty.

You can extend warranty but just FYI, I think full coverage 'platinum' plan for 6yr 100k runs around $6-7k. Someone else who recently got a quote can correct me.

I don't have a 2008 so I cannot comment on your first point. I've had no issues with my 2011 since I took delivery this past spring.

As for where to purchase I can comment as follows (perhaps you are aware already of the points I list below).

1) Private sales are fine and generally you get away cheaper. By this I mean you will not be faced with dealer mark up. You need to make sure of all inspection having been done and that the car has been inspected at a BMW dealership in the resent past. I would (if I was in the market for a 2008) have the private party take it to a BMW shop then you deal with the Service Manager and ask for a complete inspection, also tell him you are planning to purchase the car and that you would take out extended warranty ... this may run you $200- to $250- however at the end of the day you will know if anything needs to be fixed in the near future. You will have a clear picture then and if anything is found it will put you in a very good position to agree upon a final price with the seller.

Case in point, when I sold my e46 2002 M3 last year I had it inspected and a spring was replaced I paid for both the repair and the inspection then got my asking price for the car.

2) Purchasing from a BMW dealer as mentioned before will be more expensive for they want there cut as well. If it was me I would demand to see the last inspection report and also ask for extended warranty.

I'd be surprised if they did charge you for the service history. If a dealership wants to charge you then I'd suggest contacting a different dealer.

You need to provide only the last seven letters/numbers of the VIN.

I believe you can check with your dealer.

Some dealers don't reveal or allow you to see the service history. If you ask politely if anything major has been done to the car they should help you out!

Most of them should give you the service records over the phone with a VIN. You can just ask them to fax the records over.

Sorry guys, forgot to mention I am going with an M3 with DCT. Hopefully does not make a difference as far as problems.

I have a 08 with DCT. I bought it from a BMW dealer, with less than 30K. Absolutely no issues. A dealer should/could give you the service history free of charge. A good one will offer it to you up front.

Today (as a matter of fact) I just bought an A/W 08 M3 DCT with 35K on the clock. I requested all service records from the dealer (no charge) and got quotes on extended warrantees. Platinum for 6/100 was $4430. Nice chuck of change. However, what I'd do (am I gonna do) is right before factory warrantee is up, I'm going to get the powertrain+ (covers engine, tranny primarily) for $2890.

Evidently, they are not suppose to give the service records but I made the deal contingent on getting the records and they quickly acquiesced.
