Thinking of trading my car in for a cayman s

Been driving a family members base 2014 cayman lately(pdk) and I'm starting to fall in love with the car, contemplating trading my car in for a 6 speed cayman s. my car has 26k miles on it and the blue book is 40 and my car is completely paid off so it would be a little note... thoughts?

Cayman S is an amazing car. Still can't match the engine feel or sound of the S65, however. Even the 911 engine is not a match for the S65 V8. That being said, I think overall, you are talking about very "equal" cars, with some things better in the Cayman and some better in the M3.

Life is all about experiences, and now that you have experienced the M3, maybe it is time for the Cayman. However......go for the new Cayman GTS. At 340hp and under 3000lbs, that is the car to buy.

How is the 991 3.8 engine not a match? The two motors actually have extremely similar characteristics.
I know cause I own both.

The new Cayman is simply a fantastic car. If you don't need the extra room of the M3 it's a great choice.

not base Cayman, Cayman S! That's not a downgrade, practically same straight line performance as the M3 but with much better handling!!

Personal choice. I tested a Cayman S as well but decided on E92 M3. Cayman has better handling and surprisingly offered good view of surroundings from inside of car. But M3's grunt, looks (yes, I really like it more) and S65 v8 sound convinced me to go M3 route.

Huh? The 3.8 in the 991S is as good or better of an engine in every way. More hp per liter, more tq, just as linear power, and flat out feels more special and sounds better too, especially at high rpms.

The 991, it's chassis, engine and every aspect are on a different planet than anything BMWS ever made. In about 15-20 years Bmw might have something comprable to the current GT3 but will never priced a engine like it has.

The cayman S is a wonderful car. Under 100k NOTHING handles as well. Even price as no object it's possibly the best handling car in the world.

The m3 is a great car but the 991 and cayman S are as close to perfection in the car world as one can get.

Why not get a Mustang GT or Boss 302 or supercharged 370z instead? Both will have better handling and same straightline speed as an M3, yet cost a fraction of that ridiculously overpriced Porsche.

Pretty sure a C7 Vette or GTR will spank your precious cayman

One thing I agree on is the price tag. That Porsche price tag is definitely from another planet

The cayman s is truly an awesome car. Powerwise its what and what with the m but handles drastically better. The max caravan in my car is me, my gf, and my doberman. I think maybe 3 people have sat in the back. So it would suck to not be able to bring my dog with us.. its a tough one

Sorry the cayman would still out handle both of them easily.

And wrong on the second too. You're just a porsche hater. I guess those Canadian prices don't help it regardless are the best.

C7: Skidpad 1.08g and Slalom 72.8 mph. Cayman S: Skidpad 1.0 g Slalom 69.5 mph. GT-R: Skidpad 0.98 g Slalom 74.3 mph.

So much for your cayman "easily" out handling both cars

Boss 302 is a great car, we see lots of them at Watkins Glen events and they hold their own.

So I guess the fact that the 997 GT3 did 76.2 mph in th slalom qualifies then since that's the best speed of any car ever tested.

Have anyone drive the cayman and then c7 and gtr and then not pick the cayman as the best handling car. Numbers aside it's still easily the better handling car. I guess the boxster spyder being named best handling car under 100k in which it beat the m3 (6th place out of 10) the z06 and gtr doesn't say it's easily a better handling car...bc it is.

Here's the test edmunds did between the cayman S and stingray.

Tell me who won? Tell me who was picked as the better car?

http://www.edmunds.com/porsche/cayma...ison-test.html

Despite being down 140 hp and even more tq the performance is too close and the cayman S just proves as the car that is better to drive.

Yay you found one subjective test of a Cayman. Seems like the authors just were too intimidated by the Vette's power and preferred the slower car instead. Ok, then. Enjoy your cayman. Just try not to get your left hand too sore when it's busy giving point by's to GTR's and Vettes at the track.

Not a bad trade at all. Cayman S is one of the greats.

You will miss the power of the M3, but the lightness of the cayman s will produce similar numbers.

Mid engine rear wheel drive layout will just blow you away. Not in all out grip, but nimbleness. I guess you already know that since you've been driving the base cayman.

No all the reviews say the same.

Is that why the 991 C4S an Awd car beat and bested the field of cars in the MTs best drivers car which happened to be almost all red cars? Oh yea, and the 991S did the same thebwar before too mind you.

And then when they tested it vs the f12 and c7 it also unanimously won that follow up test too?

Sorry but whether you like them or not you cannot dispute they're dominance in the sports/exotics market and in Motorsport. Who has the most race wins in history? Who has overwhelmingly the most in ALMS? Who has the most Evo car of the year awards? Oh yea, porsche and the 911. And the list could go on. Porsche is so good they make the Yankees look inconsistent.

And when I did have my cayman S, I used to pass plenty of guys in vettes and fully modded m3, and many other cars who did tons of mods that look and sound great on paper but didn't add up because they couldn't handle a stock car at the limits lets alone a modded car.

OP, I might get into one as well if I don't find another E9X M3.

With regards to the engine, I am not talking about performance, only subjective feel. The Porsche motors don't have the silky easy revving character of the M3's V8. Other than that, I agree that the 991S is overall in a different league than the M3. Of course, my opinion is only based on a couple of test drives. I have never had the 991 for any extended period of time.

You are 100% right, the 3.8L Pcar motor is not as smooth for sure. I noticed it right away when I got my 991.
