Yeah, but those cars in question were much slower, so not exactly helpful in this case. Seriously though, i am really keen to know. How do u work out the difference? Mathematically or anecdotal? I am really hoping that the F10 M5 would bloody murder the E60 M5. A few buses in length would be really nice so long as we are not talking mini-bus here

Using the MotorTrend drag race, the 1st (GTR) and 4th (SLS) is .5 sec apart. A little less than 2 bus length.
http://hypebeast.com/2011/09/2011-mo...ag-race-video/ If the F10 M5 really does 124mph in 13s, it would be annihilated in this company. |

Actually the top few cars all clocked almost 124mph by the end of the quarter mile, which means 0-200km/h is quite equivalent to a quarter mile race. The only hope is that BMW is underquoting its performance.

200kph = 200,000m/3600s = 55.555m/s
0.5s x 55.55m/s = 27.777m (E92 M3 is at 4.6m in length). that gives you 6 car lengths. if you need ft, it is ~84.7 ft Keep this in mind, in 13s you will leave the other car about 6 lengths behind you. That means on average you are faster than the other car by a car length every 2 seconds. Who would not think this is considerably faster???

you can always need/want more power and nobody is saying that is a bad thing. however, you are comparing the M5 to M5. what do you expect? progress takes many forms and speed is only one of them.

And don't forget that the new M5 is about 200 lb heavier and only 50 bhp more than the old M5.....so in this conditions, 6 car lenghts at 124 mph is quite impressive.

Now let's go back to M5. Even though we have so many things that affect the acceleration lets just focus on few. We have now few things going in favor of new M5. First, lot higher toque throughout the power band. This should give this acceleration curve more rise at the beginning compared to E60 M5 even though it weights more. Second, its time to 200kph is said to be .5 sec faster than E60 M5. Third, we know E60 M5 HP will never compensate later on since new M5 has 550HP. In reality we may be looking a lot more than 6 car lengths for a race from 0-200kph.

13s at 124, I can't really picture that in my head, 124 is FAST for 13s..I wonder if 13s was the worst time, and 124 was the average trap...and if they are using launch control.

Let's not exaggerate
I would drive any Panamera which was given for free, especially the turbo ones

2) if straightline speed is your thing, insane power in both cars is only a tune and a couple mods away However, I do agree that the m5 seems to be getting a bit fat. I think the size of the current m3 is a great dd size.

The max hp number, as important as it is, don't tell the whole story. New M5 has a turbo engine, means that the area under the HP curve is greater than the old M5, which had NA engine.

I do agree with you on the Panamera....IMO it is one of the ugliest cars on the road today. It's a damn shame too.. as the performance and interior are simply amazing. |

It might not be that funny afterall. The sales manager i spoke to yest just came back from a M training in Europe and he said the M5 handles exceedingly well and hides its weight very effectively. It sounds awesome and very sharp at the helm. He also mentioned that the engineers told him the S63TU shares only the engine block with the S63 in the X5/6M despite the minor revision in engine code. They did back to back drive against the E63 and another car (i can't remember which) and the M5 came up tops. They didn't drag the cars though, but took them thru the track and B roads.
