Need some suggestions on a watch

Where to begin. Well, my wife and I have our one year anniversary coming up in a bit less than two months, and my 30th birthday is also coming up in October. Today she asked me what I want for our anniversary and I said nothing really; would rather just keep the money in the bank since we are planning on buying a house at the end of the year and also because I am starting to save up money for an M3 replacement two years down the road. But still, she insisted that I should get something to remember our anniversary by and I do agree with her.

I am someone that likes nice watches, but I am by no means a watch buff like many of the members on here (and some of my friends). I currently have two watches: an Oris Williams Renault F1 and a Seiko Premier perpetual calendar. I wear the Seiko one 90% of the time because it is a lot lighter than the Oris. Now the question is which watch should I get for our anniversary? I have been thinking maybe an Omega, a Tag, or perhaps something a bit nicer. I prefer something that would be a good investment (limited edition?), something that looks classy, metal band (not big into leather straps), and likely a dark face. I really do not know what the budget would be...maybe $2k-5k. Would appreciate some suggestions and any pics. Thanks!

You need an Omega. I really dont know if it is an investment (watches that are bought for that cost huge amounts of money methinks) but this is fun

I will say this again... if you are spending over $1,000.00 on a watch and you aren't considering a Rolex.. (considering you don't have one) You are making a mistake. They hold their value very well, and if anything gain in value more than any other.

I go with what NYC says, the only true investment watch is a Rolex. You might want to consider shopping around for a vintage Rolex which has the original box/papers. That's the kind of watch which show a return down the road.

Well I will definitely look at some Rolex watches as well. Seems like a lot of Rolex's I have seen don't look appealing to me...look like an old man's watch.

if you want an investment rolex is the only way to go. I have an explorer II and i dont think its old manish at all and has gone up in value ALOT since i purchased it.

Tags loose about 40% of their value as soon as you walk out the door with them.

If you want an "heirloom" piece, you definitely need to look at Rolex/Patek (way over your budget, and most peoples' for that matter)/AP, etc.

With a few exceptions, mostly limited editions, watches are not investments. Rolexes are not investments, they are not now and they never have been. A rolex will perhaps depreciate less than some other watches due to good brand discipline, but you can expect to take a loss when you sell it. Whatever watch you buy, it should be treated as a depreciating asset.

If 5k is your limit, then you can skip the Tags altogether as they're not worth it. You can also skip buying a new Rolex, as due to the fact that Rolex ADs aren't allowed to discount, you're not going to find many models that will run you under 5k after taxes (or even before for that matter).

Do you mean that new explorers cost more, or your particular watch? When was it purchased, and what is the current RSC appraisal vs the original price?

Rolex Submariner is pretty nice, but if you don't mind a larger watch then I suggest a Panerai. More specifically, the PAM113 White Dial (44mm diameter, 15mm thick).

Not sure about the white dials, but I've got a 176k.

To me there isn't a more perfect watch. Dress it up/dress it down... not to flamboyant, great size. Etc etc etc.

True. A Stainless Steel Daytona might be worth trying, though. I know, not the price range the OP was asking for.
