gas door malfunction?

i took my e90 into the dealership today for oil service and when i left noticed the gas door was open. usually just push it shut and it magnetically sticks but wont work. if i hold it shut and lock the doors it engages, but when i unlock the doors with the key it pops open. any ideas?

oh i read it as "glass" blame it on the booze

I believe there is a black rubber coated pin that as you push the gas cap, it goes in to close and if closed when you push it, it kicks it out. that mechanism works with a basic spring, if its not working you can ask it to be replaced/fixed, shouldnt take much time at all. Make sure you try it when the doors are unlocked. it might not close fully if you try to close it when the locking mechanism is already sticking out andpreventing it close fully

that sounds like something in the locking mechanism. it sounds like an easy fix for the dealer. bring it in and let them fix it

it works magnetically i believe. if i hold it in and actuate the locks with the fob it will grab it and stays shut, but as soon as i unlock the doors with the fob it pops open. the dealership said that if the car sat and went to sleep mode it would fix itself but didnt. wondering if reseting the system by unhooking the batter would help but then would have to reprogram everything.

The gas door buffer stop is broken... item #4, P/N 51 17 8 228 939:



... and it is not magnetic.

so then unhooking the battery wont help. how is that metal piece holding onto the door then if it isnt magnetic(metal tip and metal door and no latch mechanism) and it will do it if i manually hold it in and push the fob button to lock?

The door itself is tension-loaded; the buffer stop just do that, stops the door just flush with the fender line by locking its prong (spring-loaded) in a compressed state. What you are seeing is that the prong mechanism is broken, so the prong just stays extended thus keeping the door ajar.

This has happened a couple of times to me, on my E46 as well as the E92. I just push #4 back in and everything goes back to normal.

There were plenty at my dealer stock as this is a common replacement parts (it breaks a lot). I even bought two (they are just $7), just in case.

thanks technic you were dead on the only prob is that bmw seattle doesnt stock that part so stoped in for 30 seconds and have to go back later in the week for the fix.

That piece is not M specific, probably not even 3-series specific so all dealers should have boat load of it. that part is shared by all bmw fleet. Our cars is not that special after all hehehe

So how hard is it to replace this part (#4 in the diagram) myself? The dealer wants $160 to replace an $8 part that apparently will take them 5 mins to replace.
