Just be reasonable about it. We have 1 car and its a range rover sport. While my wife likes it she feels it too big (and it basically is) but I really like it. She suggested our next car be a 3 series. So you can see the compromise we came up with!

I'm going to try and give some tactical advice.

1. Make sure your wife appreciates the reality (or create it if not currently the case) that if you don't get the car you want you'll spend the next X years always wishing you had it. My wife knows from my buying history that i bought an X5 for practical purposes at one point and complained for 2.5 of the 3 year lease. Remember, your wife genuinely likes you to be happy. And this approach is not even remotely dishonest.

2. I went the test drive route which included numerous cars of larger size. In the end she had more fun riding around in the 335 and M3 than any other car.

3. After all of that, my only hard sell was on the 335 v M3. Two things on this issue. Make sure she appreciates how much cooler the M looks and revert back to point #1 above. I also pointed out that by the time i got a 335 loaded the way i wanted (including Dinan programming upgrade) my lease payment wasn't quite as dramatically different at less than $300/month.

Talk to her best friend, father, or whoever is her closest male confidant besides you. Tell him the situation. Since he is a man, he should have empathy for your extremely serious problem. Have him tell her how great the M3 is and how it is a family need not a personal want. She will listen to him because he is not just her husband who doesn't know anything about anything especially when it comes to needs.

Hey man I had a hard enough time convincing my wife to get my current car- she used to think it's all a waste of money and wanted to buy a Prius. She just sees cars as transportation from point A to B. Now, since she has been driving the 335i around she is in love- I think it will be much easier to convince her of the M- especially since my tactic is to keep talking about it over and over until she gives in haha.

Here is what I would do. (only if your wife requires a hard-sell, desperation tactic...but hey, it's worth it)
  1. Look at you and your wife's schedule and find a nice future vacation time frame.
  2. Do the research, put down a refundable deposit for a European Delivery that falls in that time.
  3. Watch the pre-recorded Top Gear episode with M3 C63 RS4 comparison. Ask her, just a hypothetical question, which car SHE could picture herself in. (I'd put my money on the only coupe there, the M3).
  4. For the following few days, you do a mad research on flights, hotels, everything about this European trip. Fast forward a few days.
  5. Surprise her with a nice bottle of wine and a dinner you prepared at home. Of course, you didn't forget her favorite cheesecake for dessert. She senses something is up.
  6. Float the idea of a vacation plan going from Munich to Milan to Genova to Nice to Marseille. Of course, she is interested, who doesn't like that?
  7. Go for the punch line here. Tell her how it would mean the world to you if she could go on a vacation with you and drive around the mediterranean in the new M3 for a once in a life time experience.
  8. The way I see it, you've done all the work...all she needs to say is yes.
  9. If it works, mission accomplished. If it doesn't, go back to #2 and get your deposit back.

TOP 10 REASONS TO GIVE YOUR WIFE WHY YOU NEED TO BUY THE NEW M3

10. Your passenger seat is on the National Register of Historic Places.

9. Instead of an air bag, there is a whoopee cushion taped to your steering wheel.

8. You lose the stoplight challenge to a 14 year old on a moped.

7. 15 minute Jiffy Lube needs to keep you car for 3 days.

6. When you gas up, the attendant asks, "Can I re-duct tape that windshield for you?"

5. Thieves repeatedly break in your car just to steal the "Club."

4. While sitting at a stop light, people keep running up to you and asking if anyone was hurt.

3. For the last five years, you've had to settle for making "vroom, vroom" noises while in the driveway.

2. You keep losing dates on left turns.

1. Traffic reporters start referring to you by name when discussing morning tie-ups.

if that doesn't work just get a 335i and chip it

So please help me by posting your best rational (...er maybe not for the M3..but you get the point) argument for why one needs an M3.

And since any responses to this thread have at least a 50% chance of being something along the lines of questioning my manhood for seeking the wife's input I'll just come out and say that those of us married guys should completely understand that even an M3 can be ruined when you have to hear, "Honey...I can't believe you spent $6X,XXX on an F'n Car" whenever you ride together anywhere...

Besides even flaming me for being whipped is a more enjoyable read then the 100th MDCT vs. MT post...
I can identify with your predicament.
I faced a similar challenge and one of the ways I succeeded is by convincing her that she drive as well.
I also had to comprise because I wanted a Coupe and she will rather have a Saloon- so she agreed to the M3 saloon. One thing I have noticed with my wife is that she can be initially be opposed to an idea, but with persistence she tends to see reason with me.
I have to say after we replaced her RAV4 with an X5, she seems more open to other options.
So right now she is for it, and I am holding to order it.

*****Update...Success!

thanks to everyone for the many great suggestions (and the few humorous but ridiculous ones).

Mostly through subtly letting her know I've been gathering suggestions from other enthusiasts out there...The wife has agreed to consider the possibility provided I can work out pricing

Now I need to get payments under 1000 so the whole, "it's not that much more than a 335i paymentswise" argument holds true.

Went down to the local dealer today to try it out and get some ballpark figures and the dealer says that they aren't allowed to test drive until we've agreed on numbers because they may need to transfer to other dealers and BMW has asked them not to put mileage on the car? WTF? anyone else out there experienced this?

I'll stick the figures I was quoted over in the pricing forum.

I think that's what the wife does? At least, I think that's what that noise is?

I don't have any clothes, I don't have any shoes, these are all out of style, none of these things fit, we should decorate the great room, I want to hire an architect for the back yard, do you like these drapes, we should redo the bathroom, blah, blah, blah, ...., ...., ....

I took a test drive in the new M3 and my wife asked when I returned: "When are you going to get it?" I said I wasn't sure I was but did she think it was a good idea as I have already bought 4 new BMWs since 2001? She said "Get it, at our age (late 50s) there is no time to spare. And you do love your cars!" My car is due to be here the middle to end of June. I love that woman.
