Motherboard/gpu compatability help

Ok i've been out of the hardware scene for sucha a long time now....back when agp still ruled the gaming world haha.
I know with agp you can put absolutely any type of gpu like ati and nvidia.

Am upgrading my system. I currently have sli gtx260.
The motherboards ive been seeing has this "2 PCIe 2.0 x16 Slots (@ Dual x8 speed), support ATI® CrossFireX Technology"

"SUPPORTS ATI CROSSFIREX TECHNOLOGY" and totally nothing about NVIDIA SLI.... are motherboards with the above description ONLY works for ATI GPUs so nvidia gpu woouldnt work with them?!. Same thing with onboard video. If a motherboard has an onboard ati video, would a pcie nvidia gpu be compatible wit the motherboard.

ExamPle Motherboards:

it should work as long as it is PCIe GPU's. SLI is just Nvidia's designation.

i believe if the company doesn't explicitly say that the mobo is compatible with SLI then I would assume that it isn't compatible.

also for those motherboards they are AMD processors - knowing AMD/ATI merger I wouldn't be surprised if it didn't support SLI

Correct. BIOS/Southbridge will not recognize the dual configuration unless explicitly advertised as being capable of doing so. There are a couple of motherboards that do both, though.
