Depends on what comes out from the exhaust, if its within the margin of passing then its fine. There is the visual inspection that you need to pass and some stations skip that part. I knew someone in socal that twincharged his car and he passes the tailpipe tests and the station looks the other way with the visual

Yes thats true! I almost forgot about that! They will hook the computer to your obd II port and see there have been faults in the system or something like that. Not sure if they can read any ecu tunes that coded any faults away.

Depending on the year, you don't have to smog a new car for 6 years.
Yes, the OBD only tests are coming but the visual part may or may not remain. |

So, let's say I put a high flow cat X-pipe + supercharger + a specific ESS tune on my 2008 E92.. if I find a shop that looks the other way for visual, I can expect to pass smog next time I do it (in 2 years)?

Thanks. Didn't know if the new OBDII and visual test still requires more consideration beyond what was included in the thread.. I'll just do some more reading.
Before investing in a supercharger it would be nice to get some level of assurance it'll pass smog. Sigh.. sometimes CA sucks!

If anyone knows of a shop that looks the other way on the visual, that would be nice to know.

Let me get this straight... You are swapping out parts designed by some of the top engineers in the world because some guys sponsored by a company told you it's "better??" But when you ask the same guy about tracking, "oh no, I have a kid now" or "I just detailed my car." or "i just got new tires."

If it passes smog, why can't we get a CARB legal kit? It would make life so much easier. I would definitely get the ESS 625 kit if I didn't have to worry about passing smog,

I won't speak for ESS but the "emission tunes" used to pass on these supercharged cars aren't something you can run for max performance. You load the tune, stay out of boost, under 3k rpms and pass. Being carb legal costs a company a lot of money/time.

I don't know how they can advertise the kit as anything but for off road use in CA as it is not CARB approved as far as I know. Anything less is dishonest.

Bob, sounds like what you're describing is a stock tune, no?

Yeah, there are added costs to get something CARB legal, but: #1 You own the market for this, no one else offers a CARB legal kit #2 You can charge $1000 per kit extra (or less or more), people who want a supercharger kit and want to not worry about California smog laws would be more than willing to pay (I would) #3 You can partner with dealership like Dinan does, and offer this for showroom cars. The possibilities are endless.

Yeah... so they can offer an "off-road race" tune, and a "street tune".

This is my point... since it can pass the smog test, let's push to make it smog legal. And dealers would warranty a supercharged car. There's plenty of dealers that partner with tuners and offer them upgraded with a warranty - and not just with BMW's.

Having a vehicle that can pass an OBD rediness scan is much different than going thru the process to make a kit CARB legal in CA. Due to the extreme cost and time invested to get a kit thru the CARB process "which is never a guarantee" for CA customers it is not always an option. We have no current plans to get our M3 supercharger systems CARB certified.
