A Proper Road Trip

Well, the road trip in the M3 begins tomorrow. ~6-7K KM is planned over the next 17 days. It will be entertaining to see how much go-juice gets consumed. Fingers crossed, I hope the M3 treats us right!!

I will post some photos along the way when I can.

Cheers,

Awesome! When I bought my E92 I drove it from Dallas to Vallejo, pretty close to your destination actually. I drove about about 1,700 Miles. Wasn't as scenic as your trip will be that's for sure!

Road trip

Saskatoon to Napa, this should be an epic road trip. Post anything cool along the way when you have time and drive safe!

Napa's a worthy final destination, but I can't believe you're skipping the jewel of your trip: San Francisco! Especially if you've never been there. Consider adding a morning and taking the "49-Mile Drive":

Wikipedia: "The 49-Mile Scenic Drive is a designated scenic road tour highlighting much of San Francisco, California. It was created in 1938 by the San Francisco Down Town Association to showcase the city's major attractions and natural beauty during the 1939 Golden Gate International Exposition."

I used to take visitors on this route. Never got old. Signs marking the way may or may not remain, and the route probably changed as the city evolved.

Definitely see San Francisco if you are that close! I can recommend some great windy roads in Marin County if you want to PM me.

Keep 1-2 bottles of octane boosters handy. I am not too informed about the North West but in the south, I had trouble finding stations selling Tier 1 91+ octane fuel during my road trip. Got misfire code a couple of times on my 330ci right after fueling up. M3 would be even more sensitive.

OK...random thoughts here....
Since when did they start allowing M3's in Saskatoon? Last I heard it was only dog sleds, no?
Be sure you stock up on Tim Hortons and Pilsner...
Avoid Portland...it rains there 24/7/365...

Now on to the serious stuff...
Make sure you rent dune buggies on the Oregon Coast...
Take extra time in the Redwood National Park...there's something very special about those trees...
Hit Stinson Beach and drive over Mt Tamalpais...
Get the "works" at Dr. Wilkinson's Mud Baths in Calistoga...
Hit a few wineries while in Napa/Sonoma...
SF is way cool but watch where you park...
Enjoy and post pix!

Sounds like fun. Are you going to get your rod bearings done at the halfway mark? Most people on this forum act like these cars couldn’t do it.

I will post pics when we get to Cali. Just in Salt Lake City heading to Reno.

Day 1 did involve removing spacers on the way out of town as well as about 20km of gravel thanks to my buddies bad suggestion to go south at maple creek...

I am a fan of 80MPH speed limits!! Nice section on I-15 south of great falls.

Day 2 involved back tracking because of a culvert failure on I-15 north of Boulder MT. Not a bad deal as the pass between Helena and Garrison was enjoyable even if a bit damp.

And my kingdom for an 80l fuel tank.

Loved the speed limits in Montana/Utah/Nevada as you can make some serious miles.

The road out of Salt Lake City going west on I-80 that is the definition of FLAT. I thought the prairies were flat but man oh man was I wrong... There was a section on there with no change in direction for miles and miles and miles...

Still a good time though!!

OK - Found a good slice of road in Cali!! The Glory Hole (real name ffs) to Napa on 128!! Tons-o-fun.

The M3 is a hoot - even though it really likes to drink the go-juice.

Cheers,

So far so good on the 91 octane availability. Be interesting as we wonder up the coast to Oregon.
