Best way to check MPG
I have 3500 now and just went on a little trip.
This is what we got. 34 MPG in a 60 mile stretch. HWY at 70 MPH 27 MPG within the city, stop lights and all. What we did to test this was to reset the MPG at every drive type eg. HWY & CITY. Warning, I do not know if this is a bug, but if you reset it while idling for a few minutes, say more than 3, the number will be off. I think it's a bug. Here is the best way to check: Go to a gas station and remember the pump you are using. Put the nozzle in and let the pump stop by itself. Do not over fill. Pull it out when it stops. Rest trip odometer. Drive for about 30-50 miles. Go back to the EXACT SAME PUMP THAT DAY you used, Re-fill and let it run till it stops by itself. Do not overfill. Divide the miles driven by gallons used on the second fill up, E.g. 30 miles divided by 1.2 gallons on second fill up = 25MPG |

I think that you may have an issue with the small gasoline volume, and the assumption that it is shutting off at EXACTLY the same point.
A small difference in volume will make a significant difference in MPG I think it would be more accurate to fill to a set point in the filler neck, but this is not possible now with the new restrictors in the neck. |

Good news that you are getting 27/34 mpg. The Road and track stat of 16.5 had me freaked -- I am a bit spoiled by the good mileage of my 323i. Sure wish we could get diesels here in the USA...

With 500 miles on my 325i, I am getting about 16mpg city and 27.5 highway.
Hard BMW driving, of course.

Doesn't matter which pump you use as long as you fill the car all the way up (i.e. to the top of the filler neck). Then you use those numbers along with the mileage driven for an ACCURATE fuel consumption check. Otherwise, your numbers will be flawed. Tracking your fuel mileage is an excellent way to determine engine health.

On my 330i's drive to Seattle from LA I got about 24mpg, averaging about 80mph.
In the first 400 miles in and around LA before that I only got about 16-17mpg on very calm, break-in driving. I'm hoping it all improves.

On board computer
I am not following what you guys are doing to calculate the mileage. Why don't you use the onboard computer to see mileage and avg speed ?
In my 330i I have 1700 miles, gives me a reading of avg 33.8 mph and 24.5 mpg (sometimes 24.7). |
