Near Olympia...

Hey to all,

Just wanted to check in here. I'm near Olympia. Just got an 08 E92 6MT a couple of weeks ago. It ran great for about a week or so, then just suddenly died one night and hasn't run since. It appears to be a no fuel delivery problem but, the ekp module, fuel pump, dme relay have all been changed with no help.

Anyone on here have the inpa, cable, knowledge, etc. that they'd be willing to donate to the cause? I don't know a lot about these cars, but, am going to have to come up to speed pretty quick. If not, can someone recommend a really capable, TRUSTWORTHY specialist that they've done biz with lately? Preferably, one that won't rake us over the coals?

Thanks and hope to see you out there soon.

Regarding reputable and trustworthy specialists, I am in Olympia and have had luck with Olympia Autohaus in downtown Olympia. The guys have worked on my e90 M3 and they seemed to know their stuff.

Regarding the car, I would pull codes and start doing research. There's a ton of resources on this site alone with people having gone through a myriad of issues and how to resolve them.

Good luck!

Thanks jblaze21,

I don't have much of a choice but to keep trying to find the problem. I can't really afford 'wire-chasing' diagnostics by any import shop right now. At $90 - $120 per hour, I'll be broke within the first day! Fuse #16 keeps blowing and 'Ron1n' up in Redmond mentioned earlier that he thought that IS the DME fuse. That would definitely be consistent with the problem at hand. It could be a nightmare to find if it's bad wiring anywhere in between the DME, fuel pump, and engine harness. If it's the DME itself, the car will just have to sit for a while till I can wash more dishes...

Trying to troubleshoot without the computer-based diagnostic equipment and good ol' schematics to work from is just miserable. I'm not getting very far with it right now.

I appreciate the Autohaus lead in Olympia. I might very well wind up there but, I'm hoping (like you said) to figure it out with the help of knowledgeable people on these forums if I can.

Thanks again, Tracy

If you get up my way, I can pull codes for you, but that's not really a short trip, and I don't go to Olympia much (read: ever). :P

Hey again Ron1n,

I just want to say 'thank you' again sincerely, and I DO mean 'THANK YOU'! You are one of only two people who have responded to my call for help. jblaze21 from around Olympia was the other. At last count, there were quite a few 'views' to my post, but, you two were the only ones who actually took the time to respond after what has now become a full week since my original post. That's REALLY disheartening...

I've always tried to share what I know with others on other forums throughout the years. I've managed to help quite a few people out with a variety of things from cars to appliances, aircraft to fabrication, etc. I guess that's just our current culture, or, maybe I'm just getting old.

Enough of my rant. I ordered a BMW specific diagnostic scan tool a couple of days ago. It's a direct, plug in and have fun unit. It's supposed to do a lot of the things (code read and clear, live data, actuations, commands, programming, coding, etc.) that have been similarly described with INPA and a DCAN cable and a laptop. I'm 'old school' and not terribly computer savvy so, I tend to keep it simple if I can. This tool is coming from overseas and will take a couple of weeks to get here. Hopefully, it will start to lead me in a particular fault direction.

I will post up what I find so that hopefully, it might help someone else down the road. I will also make this tool available to others that are local if it proves to be worth it's weight in gold.

I'll also have to take a ride up your way once it's up and running and buy you a cup of coffee! I wouldn't necessarily come down this way either except, I live here...

Take care, Tracy

I just had to replace my low pressure fuel sensor as it was throwing codes and put my car in reduced power mode twice. Once I replaced the sensor, the SES light went off and my codes went away. Things need replaced every now and then and it's very nice to have the tools necessary to do the job.

I'm lucky because I have an integrated P3 vent gauge that shows me all active codes every time I start the car so codes are easy to see. This thing has been worth it's weight in gold just for that reason let alone everything else it does. Probably isn't much more money than a OBC scanner.

http://www.turnermotorsport.com/t-p3-vent-gauge.aspx

Since you just bought it from someone, have you gone back to them to get history and see if they know what's going on?

You guys should come to the Cars and Coffee run on Sunday. I could use some more BMW brethren. :P

Hey again jblaze21

I took a look at the p3 vent gauge. That's a pretty nice setup. It's looks convenient and they did a really nice job of integrating it.

As I said earlier, my car is still down while I'm waiting for this new scan tool to show up. I haven't really done much else with it. It would be great to have a hard copy service manual (like a Bentley?) right about now. If nothing else, I could be looking at schematics and the circuit(s) that apply to fuse #16. I'm pretty sure (even at this point) that the no-start condition and the blown fuse are interrelated, although, I also need to get a better understanding of the whole starting sequence for this car.

Thanks for your support and hope to see you out there soon. We're around Olympia quite a bit so I'm sure we'll hook up at some point.

I just realized that I didn't answer your question about the previous owner...

That is it's own can of worms. I'm aware that the engine was completely replaced by the previous owner with a low mileage engine. (actually, his 'qualified' BMW specialist replaced it) It APPEARS to be a solid installation and done correctly but, who knows? For instance, maybe they pinched a critical engine wire harness during the install, or attached something incorrectly that isn't obvious to the eye. I just can't say for sure at this point. It sure did run pretty solid for the whopping week and a half that it was running.

Knowing what codes are stored is the next step, along with finding out whether or not the DME is getting any power, as well as the proper signals to fire off the engine if it is getting power.

Hopefully, I'll find out the answer to many of these questions soon.

Thanks, Tracy

Hey Ryan,

What's this 'cars and coffee' thing all about? I wasn't aware there was an event like that. Where and when is it??? Like you, I don't get up your way too often, but, I suppose I could take a trip up there for a cup of 'joe'. I may even take a ride up there on the bike since the car is dead in the water...

I also wanted to ask if you had any experience with 'Kevin' at KD automotive up your way?

Lemme get to a PC and I'll post up the deets. The drive this Sunday starts in Redmond, but they normally have them start all over (frequently in Kent/Renton/Puyallup).

The drive is this Sunday? It's super bowl Sunday or else I'd try to get up there.

Whenever you guys have these, post up the details and I'll be there!

Good call, jblaze21! I need to watch these two teams beat on each other, especially after the Hawks got shut out. Think about it, no car AND the Hawks got shut out? I'm REALLY having a bad month!

Ryan, please let us know the schedule when you have a chance. I'd like to join up whenever the car is up and running. I didn't realize that you meant it was a driving thing. It'll be kinda tough for me without the car part of it. When you first mentioned it, I thought you meant everybody meets for coffee at a restaurant or some other predetermined place to talk about cars. Don't get me wrong, I'd be happy to go a drive if the car was running....

We do that, too. Just not this time. If you use the Facebooks, join the Seattle Cars & Coffee group (just click the link I put up above) and any of the meets we schedule will pop up there.

Also, there's nothing stopping you from riding shotgun with someone.

Ryan,

I checked out your links earlier. This Sunday's ride looks like it will be a good one. I'm definitely planning on catching up with you 'Northeners' in the near future.

By the way, I also came across your video of the exhaust mod. you had done. Your car sounds really good! It's got a nice, healthy grumble to it.

Thanks, Tracy. I highly recommend it as the cheapest mod you can do to your exhaust to make it sound more like it should have coming from the factory.

yongj got his done today at the same place. It's WAYYY far away from you, but the boys that did the work are GOOD.
