Going to E92 M3 from 2013 335, opinions needed

Hi everyone, looking for some opinions. I've been leasing 335s for the last 8 years. The last one was a 2009 335 that had full bolt ons and JB3 and now I am on a 2013 335 M performance edition with full bolt on again and JB4. Both cars were fun to drive and pretty fast but I am sick of leasing and craving an M3. Sadly the new M3 is beyond what I want to pay for a lease.

My lease is up next May and I am seriously considering buying a 2013 Alpine White M3 coupe. Has anyone done this jump backwards and what can I expect as far as daily drive reliability summer and winter in Montreal. One thing that worries my is the actuators and rod bearings issue.

Thanks for any advice.

I agree. The chances of your rods and actuators are really high, they increase exponentially with each model year. Plus, the added maintenance costs of changing bearings with every oil change and actuators with every spark plug change is bonkers. I would lease another 335 tbh.

Not really sure what you mean by "jump backwards" but I've had both a 335i and M3 and they are very different cars. It depends on what you want out of the car. I felt like the 335i was a better all around DD car because of the responsivness of the motor and how early the tq comes in. The s65 has to be wound out to be appreciated. The motor doesn't come alive until around 5500 RPM so if your expecting low end punch that is not this motor. There is something very special about the car though - they way the revs build and the noise it makes. Theres just so much drama with it.

The car has proven to be fairly reliable but like any modern car this car has lots of electronics and can be costly to repair when they fail. Call it the ///M tax. Hope that helps.

I wouldn't do it. Keep the 335i. It's not much of an upgrade.

Buying used e9x m3 is like gambling IMO.
You dont know how it was used and these engines need to be warmed up before going over 3000RPM.

Daily driver? Stay with a 335i. Reliability issues aside, the S65 wants to stretch its legs, not stuck in bumper-to-bumper, putting around town, or cruising on the highway.

At one time I both an N54-equipped E89 Z4 and my E92 M3. I much preferred the Z4 for daily driving.

Do you run PSS? I can't decide over that or continental. I've tried searching but can't find anything. Also will I be okay running 255/275? Will I rub?

I never get sick of pulling up to a tuned 335 at a stop light.

i had an FBO n54 before i swapped to an s65 in my 1series and the truth is, while the n54 can have more and easier power gains through modding it is not a better engine for MY goals. The s65, linear, instant throttle, robust cooling, 8600rpm and the sound create an entirely different experience than an n54. The s65 has rod bearing issues which can be addressed easily and the n54 also has its own well documented issues. I dont think either one is necessarily more or less reliable than the other if both maintained.

I think you just need to get your priorities sorted and pick the right car for them. They are both good platforms, just different tools for different jobs. N54 will be quicker on the street and the s65 better on the track.

I feel like you guys should stop babying the engine. My car sees well over 7000 RPM every day - multiple times a day. This engine likes italian tune-ups, and well, I'm at 144,600 miles with no major fails.

No complaints about torque if you wind the engine out like you're supposed to - who cares if I look like an asshole driving that way on the street - you're in a BMW, you're presumed to be an asshole anyway

Given the high RPMs I had to do to keep up with you, I'd say so as well
