Thumbs up Autoexpress impressed by M3 ZCP Competition Package Model

In the latest Autocar they have finally tested the M3 equipped with the 'Competition Pack' and their opinion is more than just favourable, in fact it's took the M3 to another level of involvement.

P.S.
It's everything I said it would be.

Impressive. According to Evo, the M3 is much better than the RS5!

http://www.evo.co.uk/carreviews/evoc...on_review.html

Quote:
As with last year’s M3 Edition, it rides 10mm lower than standard, and although the hardware is the same, the software has been re-programmed.

That basically means the stability control (claimed to be the world’s most advanced system) has been revised...

How does it compare?

The Audi RS5 will be the obvious comparo and as I haven’t driven it yet, I’m not in the position to give you the definitive answer. However, if you read Chris’s pieces on testing the Audi RS5 you’ll find out he doesn’t think the M3 has too much to worry about in the dynamic department. Shame.

Regarding involvement which ultimately leads to entertainment then I would probably agree with that sentiment, but there is no doubting that the RS5 has moved the game forward from where the RS4 left off, regardless of what Chris has said it is more entertaining to drive and has a more rwd basis to it's driving style than ever before. What BMW have done is more the M3 to another level beyond this, so while it might not ultimately be as quick overall it still retains the margin of entertainment that keeps it the enthusiasts choice.

It depends on which way you view the term best, such words can be used in a multiple of ways that mean different things to different people.

No doubt about it the M3 is still the most entertaining of the breed and the car that I would chose to take to the track above all others, in this sector at least. But as the best all-rounder to marry pace in all weather conditions with refinement and make all of this appear child's play then I think no one would dispute the RS5 will probably be best at this.

Different strokes for different folks.

Seems to me that the RS5 is really quite quick (according to all the reviews I've read/watched). I think Top Gear sums it up best actually:

Quote:
Overall, then, the Audi RS5 will be exactly what most people want most of the time. It goes faster than anyone will ever need, it pootles around town brilliantly, it's comfortable, well made, exclusive, looks good, grips well. But I still wouldn't buy one. I'd have a BMW M3 or Mercedes C63 AMG, simply because of the delicacy of the feedback in those cars. I prefer to be in constant touch with what the car is doing, not feeling isolated from it. Effortless is great, but there's no challenge, and that's where true satisfaction lies.
In any case, I'd love to see the times to can do...

yup so the m3 is still the most involving and hence the best car to own since all of these are totally adequate in the performance department! isolation sucks, I got this car to have fun!

Well, here we go. I can just imagine an Audi guy on a Audi forum saying:

Or something like that.

If your priority is entertainment, then yes, the M3 is probably the best choice. But if you want it to be relaxed when you want to and slightly insane when you feel like, then may be the RS5 might be a better package. If, on the other hand, you want your car to be super-fast then you might look into a GT-R. Like Footis said; different strokes...

At the end of the day it's what floats your boat that is important.

There is one underlining thing that everyone needs to remember here. Competition is a good things, it adds to the possible choices and options one can pick from.

RS5's engine is probably going to be pretty awesome. I wonder how it compares to the S65?

It should be better for daily drive, it has more torque at lower rpm due to +0.2l more displacement.

I am surprised about M3 Competition. I was really disapointed about the little modifications and hoped more from M3 Clubsport if it ever came. So M3 is still King. It doesn't mean it is the best, but in one thing it is unbeatable till today. The same goes for M5, it will still be King(M5 F10), but in another way.

444bhp and 317lbft of torque is not that much of a jump when the RS5 weighs
in at 70-100kg more. The torque arrives slightly later than the S65 as well. I would guess that straight line performance will be very close.

Heres a short video review of the RS5 from Car magazine :

Thats actually a great video of the RS5.

As others have mentionned different needs for different people. If you want to only have 1 car year round and do have snow in winters the new RS5 does sound like a great choice.

I have to say the sound of the exhaust was beautiful as well...

The Autoexpress article is quite interesting - it says quite well how competition improves the breed.

The article implies either:

1. There is a new M Dynamic mode
or
2. They think M Dynamic mode is a new feature of the competition mode

Is there a new M Dynamic mode with the competition package?

Yes. In addition to the new hardware, there is a revised M Dynamic Mode DSC setting and a revised Sport EDC setting.

Amazing video. The engine is the masterpiece in this car. Sounds just wonderful at 8500 rpm. The price at 57,000 pounds is in the same ballpark as the M3.

Actually the RS5's engine has more torque than the S65 everywhere, so don't assume that the figures suggest something different.

Anyhow, this thread is more about the M3 'Competition Pack' and less about the RS5.

I really don't see the value in the ZCP. I almost ordered it, probably would have if the wheels were forged. But just not value added enough with the m-drive remapping etc... Guess it's just best for people who live at the track.
