Advice - City trip to Barcelona

Hi all, ive had my D5000 for around 8 months and ive been taking photos here and there getting used to how a DSLR works.

Jade (fiancé) and I are going on a short city break to Barcelona,(one of many cities we are starting to visit) and im wanting to know which lens would best suit a city for day and night.

At the moment i have the standard 18-55 but do have access to an 18-200.

Advice on this would be great thanks

A thread without picture wouldn’t be cool so here is a few ive shot over the 8 months of having the camera, opinions would be nice to see how im getting along.

Nice pics! I really like the Tiger one, but I would've framed it differently. Same goes for Lonely Lynn. Your Bimmer pic is good.

Barcelona is near the top of my bucket list of cities to visit. Just below Prague.

I would think your choice of those two lenses would depend on where you'll be doing most of your photography. If you'll be in tight quarters, like the inner city or inside buildings, then there is probably no need for the long lens. Just the opposite, of course, if you'll be taking shots from outside the city looking in or shots like your Lonely Lynn or Jade and Billy Walking.

Then again, if you don't mind the extra heft of the 18-200 and it's a decent quality lens, you'd have more versatility.

I think I Would be doing mostly inner city and close shots of larger buildings. Is there a lens less then 18/wide angle? Would this type of lens suit city photography ?

Sure, there's a 10-22mm lens that's perfect for city work. Check out Gary88's shot here: http://www.zpost.com/forums/showpost...&postcount=734. You could try renting a lens for the time you'll be traveling.

Definitely get an ultra-wide angle lens if you're shooting large buildings from close-up. Mark suggested a good one. I heard the Tokina one is excellent for the Nikons as well.

I meant the cropped section, not the aperture setting (f number). I really like that photo, but it's too centered for me. This might help you with your composition:

I've never heard about renting a lens, I'll check it out. Also is it best sticking with nikon lens or are the other makes good and do they do the same job ?

Although "borrow" is a misnomer here. Rented is what they are. Read the agreement carefully. Their insurance covers damage *if* they think it was not intentional or due to negligence. If you lose the lens, you bought it.

really good prices on borrowing the lens but ill have to see if they have anything available in the uk :S

Also just checked out the price on the 10-20 / 10-22 / 10-24 lens and they cost just a few gold coins

your 18-55 is perfect for city walk but if you have access to 18-200, you should take that instead. Those wide angle lenses are nice for a few shots but I wouldn't use that as a walk around lens. If you're just taking photos of the city then I would use 10-22 but if you're gonna be taking pics of people 18mm-Xmm is good.
You might have problems when you go indoors though since those lenses only go to f/3.5 but that's where the M mode come in.
