Tire comparison, maybe apples to oranges comparison

Hi Guys,
Disclaimer, this comparison may not be exactly apples to apples, but I still would like to hear your opinion.

I have an e90 m3 with the 19"rims and OEM michelin tires (245 in the front and 265 in the rear).

I recently acquired a set of 18" TE37 SL with Hankook v12, 235 in the front and 265 in the rear. I know this is not the size to be running for our car, but the plan was to use up the tires and at that point switch to appropriate tire size. With this set up I notice less grip compared to the OEM michelin. This can be contributed to 2 factors, smaller tire width and perhaps tire brand/quality?.

My question is what do you think the grip will compare like with Hankook v12 in 265 and 285 vs the 245 & 265 from the OEM michelin.

I want to know before I go out and get some PSS.

Wider tire equals more grip, but the downside is that the tire/wheel combo will be heavier which means a lazier handling "feel"

Overall the PSS is a better tire than the Hankook

So would you take a Michelin PS2 in 245, 265 or Hankook v12 in 265, 285

The right answer depends on the width and offsets of your wheels. You said you had TE37 SL's but you didn't provide any specs...

TE37SL: 18x9.5, 18x10.5 (i cant remember the offset off the top of my head, but its the standard offset for m3)

The PS2 were originally mounted on the OEM 19" 220 wheels.

So are you asking if the tires from your 19" wheels will fit your new 18" wheels??

BTW - te37sl's are available in 9.5 et 22 and 9.5 et 15. Both of which are considered M3 fitment.

No, I'm just asking difference in performance/grip level. From OEM 19" 220 in PS2 vs a 265/285 wrapped in Hankook v12

I just checked, I have 9.5 et22 btw

Ok I think I understand now. This is a tough one... I generally prefer wider tires / wheels but I'm not a fan of the v12's. If you were considering the Hankook RS3's it would be an easy decision (I would choose the wider 18" RS3's). I would expect the PS2's to outperform the v12's even if the PS2's are narrower and larger diameter. You won't notice much difference in casual driving.

From an aesthetic standpoint I would choose the 19's if the car was at stock ride height. The 18's are best when the car is lowered on coilovers.

The V12's are much worse tires than the PS2 and even moreso the PSS. I doubt even the wider tires would overcome the inferiority of the tire, especially in the PSS. That tire is almost miraculously good.

Hankook V12 are not considered very performance oriented. They're solid tires for budget, comfort and better summer grip than most but NOT on the same level as PS2 or PSS.

much more important than the minute difference in weight from the tires is having the proper width wheel for a given tire size.

you will notice that BMW likes to use stretched tire / wheel fitments. the stretch allows the wheel to provide some extra sidewall stiffness that helps with steering feel and cornering stability

the right tire size depends on your wheel widths.

on topic, the v12 is a low quality tire that cannot keep up with a high powered car that already has traction issues with higher quality tires like the m3. the soft sidewall will also introduce more roll and slop into your cornering and steering feel.

spend more for better tires is my advice.

EDIT : seeing that you have 9.5/10.5 wheels, 265/35 and 285/35 is proper fitment and will have approximately the same amount of stretch as the OEM wheels did on 245/265.

I would say the same thing about my re11 vs pss

Extreme performance tires are far superior to max performance, even the revered pss
