what are the chances that the item in-tow is actually heavier than the car towing it?

... ample opportunity to pull over. Instead the driver continued at speed. Never once did he check his speed with the brakes. That was just terrible.

Buddy of mine was hauling a trailer full of Harley's back from Daytona and lost the trailer like that. Surprisingly little damage to the bikes. It really screwed up the tow package and frame on his truck, though. Small wheels on the trailer and no stabilization bars can get you in trouble fast. Once it's starts doing the side to side bit, you're doomed.

Oh wow, towing something that was probably much higher than his car's load rating and going 100mph while doing it, it's no wonder....

Looks like the driver was trying to save it with his drifting skills.

I think if the tow car is heavy enough, you would want to brake. Otherwise, this is exactly what happened to the dude in the video.

You can consider a trailer to be a pendulum just like the one in your grandfather clock. All pendulums have a natural frequency and will try to swing back and forth (oscillate) at their natural frequencies whenever possible. On a trailer, a small oscillation can easily become a major fishtail from which it is almost impossible to recover. Once a fishtail starts and the driver of the tow vehicle tries to slow down, the trailered vehicle will try to push the tow vehicle from side to side. If there is not enough weight on the tow vehicle's rear tires, the rear tires will break loose from being pushed around and a loss of control is inevitable. Higher speeds magnify the pendulum effect and your brakes will have to absorb the kinetic energy that increases with the square of speed (doubling your speed increases your kinetic energy 4 times).

I think we need a DIY for not flipping your trailer over.
