AiM SOLO Installs?

I am curious how people are mounting SOLO's in their cars? I am not ready to do it yet, but I am pretty sure that most HPDE's don't allow things to be mounted with suction cups, so how are people mounting these?

I've never had an issue with a suction cup, as long as it's inside the car. I mount mine right by the center of the windshield with the suction cup mount.

Oh, I thought I'd read somewhere you couldn't use suction cup mounts.

I'm pretty sure there's groups that don't let you, at least for me, down here in FL it hasn't happened yet.

Different HPDE organizations have different policies.... but the tightening-up of camera/equipment mounting policies is pretty obvious. There are been too many suction cup mounts coming off mounted outside and inside cars and sponsors are changing policies to keep it from becoming an issue. Some sponsors require secondary leashes for anything mounted inside the cabin - even if it is physically fastened to some mount. Of course a suction cup mount in a car needs to be very secure AND not block the driver's or passenger's view out of the windshield.

On an E46 M3 - I use a bracket I originally had for an XM/Sirius radio. They make these custom for different models. It has the advantage that its the right size, can be adapted to have a secondary safety leash and can tilt up/down and left/right.

This method is probably easily the same for an E92.

i have seen this used http://www.amazon.com/Mountek-nGroov.../dp/B004G1L52Q but i used a ram mount that i had extra and used 3m extra strength automotive tape to mount it in the iDrive "cave"

Nice! Looks very similar to the Bracketron positioning.

Any of the Proclip/Brodit, Bracketon, Kuda, or RAM mounts should work.

OP: Most HPDEs will let you use suction cups. Again, I recommend you post these questions on M3forum.net or E46fanatics as the non suction cup answers for your E46 might be different than it would be for an E9x.

On my E46 M3, I have a small aluminum angle piece riveted to the center vent. I use heavy duty Velcro to mount the magnetic clip to the angle aluminum piece. Solo clips to magnetic piece. The ECU harness is routed back through the vent to the CAN and to switched power.

I put it on the glass but to the far lower left driver side. That way it's just about as tall as the gauge cluster. I can look right over it, it doesn't block my view of cones/curbs, and I don't have to take my eyes off the track to read it at a glance.

Most of my customers mount it low on the windshield on the right side of the gauge clusters. Some mount it on the left. Just make sure it is not obstructing your vision of the road. Here are a few examples. Always check with your HPDE/racing organization regarding the rules of using suction cups.

Half the orgs I run with won't let me use the suction cup so I ended up tie wrapping the bracket to the passenger-side center vent, works well.

I am debating between a solo DL or a vbox sport and I know for the vbox they recommend an external antenna.

Can one be used with the Solo?

How does the accuracy compare to the vbox? Vbox have a great brand name and people I know have loved theirs but I am drawn in by the logging functions of the DL.

The vbox sport I believe runs at 20 hz while the solo runs at 10hz. The solo and the vbox I think are the same price ~$400, but the solo dl is def the better buy if you want to pull more than GPS data. I would go with Solo DL.

Yup regardless of where you mount the Solo, the GPS will work as long as it can see the sky.

In terms of accuracy, I was told that AiM ran a test against magnetic timers during a pro race and the lap times recorded by GPS was within just a few thousands of a second accurate (<0.00x sec). This should be more than good enough for track day/club racers.
