Switched to M1 0W40 and Redline D4 ATF

2010 E92 M3 MT has 106,000km or 61,000 miles on the odometer.

Switched to Mobile One 0W40 engine oil and Redline D4 ATF Manual Transmission oil yesterday. Previous to this, all the fluids were BMW OEM.

There was noticeable difference in how the engine and the shifter felt after the change. The engine was quicker to rev, more responsive and felt stronger at lower RPMs.

The shifter is slightly smoother and the 1-2 crunch is gone.

Very happy with the results.

Forgot to mention, the trip computer is showing better mileage was well.

As this was the first post warranty period oil change, I took it to an indy shop in Toronto and the entire thing cost $150 all in.

Sure I didn't get to sit in a fancy lounge with complimentary coffee, but I saved north of $300.

hey sounds awesome, which indy shop did you use in the T dot ? Did you have to bring your own oil or did they stock it ?

Curious to know which shop as well. I am thinking of doing a transmission fluid flush with my next oil change.

I am debating between Redline MTF vs Redline D4 ATF. Any suggestion and/or recommendation?

I went with the D4, I live in pretty warm weather and it does shift better than OEM especially once warmed up.
Ill be switching to Motul here soon to see which is better.

Placebo. There is about a 0% chance that this change could make a perceivable difference of that type. I also switched to 0-40 for several reasons so I'm not saying this because I'm an OEM hardliner.

M1 0w40 is considerably thinner (HTHS of 3.8 versus TWS's 5.4), so there is going to be less parasitic drag on the engine. I'd be willing to bet that with the M1 it would dyno slightly higher.

I agree but would put the gain as too little for the average driver to feel. Probably a few rwhp. If it gained 2% power, most could not feel it. A dyno could measure it but you will often get that much variation between runs anyway. Should show up in mpg as well and could be measured there.

The willingness to rev faster is something you can't measure on a dyno. You'd almost need a throttle position/RPM over millisec graph or something to show that.

The lighter weight oil changes the character of the engine. It's more responsive. MPG is 1-2 more for me on 0w40. Definitely not placebo.

Every time someone does a modification to their car they make multiple claims about characteristic changes because they expect it. This is true even for things that are proven to not add any power. The only way to test the perceivable difference (not a measured minutia of a difference) is to do a blind test with unbiased testers. For example, have someone test the car with an unknown weight and change the oil to a different weight and ask them to give an impression. Also on a different round of testing tell them you changed the weight but do not actually do it. If the human brain is looking for a difference it will usually find one.

May be placebo, but if anything, I thought I was going to notice a change in the shifting more than the engine.

It's been a month and the computer told me to add 1 more litre of oil. Hopefully the 0W40 doesn't really burn at 1L per month or else the BMW 10W60 may even be cheaper over the course of the recommended oil change interval.

The Indy shop is called BM Wizard located in North York. Matt is a great guy and only service BMWs. He had a funny line. I asked him why there was a Bentley parked in front of his shop and he was like, the owner has 5 BMWs so I have to service his Bentley too. lol

Tell Matt John in the Grey M3 sent you and he will take care of you.
