Most Outrageous Options

Just saw this episode of Drive where they reviewed some of the most outrageous options offered by auto manufacturers. I can't believe that you can actually option a base 3 series to be more expensive than an M3!!!

If you think BMW is bad watch the whole video

What option(s) did you get on your Bimmer that you later regretted? Or conversely, what option(s) didn't you get that you later wish you had?

Sure. Either you get choices or you don't. Am I missing something? BTW, a lot of stuff they add are REALLY ridiculous like maintenance and extended warranties.

This is exactly why Porsche is a horrible value new, but a great value used. You can get some very nicely optioned Porsches for only a little more than their bare bones counterparts on the used market. The cost of those options hold little value in the used market.

I bought my 2009 Cayenne GTS with only 8600 miles on it for $67,000. New It was over $91,000. It came with Porsche Dynamic Chassis Control, a $4000 option, and The Sport Design wheels, which were $3500 upgrade. I paid virtually NOTHING for these upgrades on the used market.

Perhaps this confirms your declaration...

"The Guy," on the right happens to own the record for fastest drive across the United States 31 Hours 4 minutes. The vehicle used, E39 BMW M5.

imo parking sensors are the stupidest options ever. no offense to anyone who has them whatsoever. just take a look at the cars that have them...they usually have scuffs on their rear bumpers

Wish I would have got premium sound system. Didn't think I would listen to the stereo as much as I have and notice the tweeters crackle a little bit. I agree with the back up sensors pretty pointless. I would eater install a back up camera. Also in regards to Alex Roy, he has a book called the Driver covering his race across the US from New York to LA. It's actually an ok book.

To each is own. I really enjoy Alex Roy's Live and Let Drive series on Drive. Live and Let Drive, is not the show the OP posted.

He's definitely not for everyone.

+1. You ache to listen to them just to get to the actual car review etc. There's nothing in this country like Fifth Gear, Top Gear UK, etc. - I like MotorWeek, but it's a bit too conservative.

Next time I am skipping Navigation. I find that often I prefer the maps function on my phone to the car nav.

The most worthless option has to be the dynamic suspension, sport mode is useless.

Same can apply to our cars. My 2008 E90 had all options on it except DCT and alarm, 8200 miles, $67 sticker, bought it in 2010 for $46k cash.

Your Cayenne was an awesome deal. I found some pretty sweet 997 C2s deals out there in similar fashion...upgraded wheels, sport chorno, etc for virtually free options with low miles.

It's crazy when all the options on a particular vehicle total more than the base price!!!

I realize that this is where most of the profits are for car manufacturers, but I wonder how many times - or if ever - has an actual buyer checked off all the options where it doubled the base price of the car?

It's really sad to see most of these options are nothing but cosmetic changes & don't actually improve handling or performance.

I remember the days where the majority of options were things like power windows/locks, AC, CD player, etc. I guess now that those things are standard offerings, car manufacturers have moved on to other things. Who really needs their seat belt painted a different color??

I blame all the ricers for customizing their cars with aftermarket parts forcing the auto manufacturers for wanting a big piece of that market.

I have to admit though that there is nothing better than seeing a four banger Japanese car that's made to look like a stealth jet but when you look under the hood it's bone stock
