Trading m's

Has anyone heard of people actually swapping cars with someone else? I have an m3 e93 which i love but am considering selling for another car due to new addition to fam-baby time. Instead of getting killed on price thought actually might make sense to trade for a sedan or even an x5. Any ideas? Ty.

Doesn't hurt to try. I've seen 'WTT' adds all the time, but have no idea if they have worked, and how to actually pull it off. Probably each party make a bill of sale to each other, or something like that. But both cars would have to be paid off (or pay them off before the trade), I'd believe. So some research on the classifieds, and ask the posters if they had any luck. Hope you do .

Your M3 is an '08, so, you've already absorbed the depreciation hit that occurs in the first two years of ownership. As such, you will likely be better off selling the car outright. Trading the car at a dealership is not an option because you'll get crushed on the trade. Trading with an individual is feasible, but often complicated (and risky). Besides, I can't imagine very many sedan or SUV owners wanting to trade for a coupe, much less for a convertible. Selling the car is the best option; both financially and in practical terms. Good luck!

I would give the dealer trade-in idea a shot. Nothing to lose.

I had a 11,400 mile '08 e92 m3 that I traded in for an 2011.5. I got about what people are asking on this board in trade and what Edmunds True Market Value shows as a recommended purchase price for the new one. In other words, not full sticker. Plus, your equity goes towards the purchase price which lowers your sales tax... if you have sales tax that is. Plus, 1.9% financing for 60 months was pretty appealing. I'm not sure if BMW is still offering that. I do know they are offering 2.9% for 72 months if you need to finance. I also did the ZCP which sorta took care of a mod or two I was after anyway. Not to mention a reset on the warranty and oh yeah, that intoxicating new car smell...

The only thing that sucks is the depreciation hit. BWTF, enjoy it while you can. The big bus could jump out in front of you tomorrow...

thanks for the comments. i actually bot my car used with 8500 miles on it in april - put 5k since then (and i live in NYC so not easy to do), but have taken some weekend trips, etc. so good thing is i never took that depreciation hit. definitely not at the point yet where i am researching prices to sell, but i know if/when i do, will NOT be a trade in but at least a sale to a private owner. car is paid off as bot with cash from a reputable individual. so... ill let you know if i do anything.
