1) The M3 is on the higher end of the spectrum of whaT my wife is "allowing" me to spend on a car. Could we afford more? Sure, but I think spending ~55k on a car is a fine compromise at the moment. 2) Rates on the '12s right now are pretty terrible, whether I can afford it or not, I'm not trying to get myself locked into a bad rate / deal. 3) Conversley, the rate I'd be getting on the '11 is very good. 4) The '11 M3 is EXACTLY what I want as far as the color, transmission, roof type go and it is sitting there on the lot. I know it is missing a few options, but it is very tempting to me. |

If you can afford it, it is absurd to buy something that is 55k that is not exactly when you want when you CAN afford the extra ~7k. Why would anyone spend 55k for something that is not what they want?
All the additional reasons stated regarding price is nickel and diming a 55k purchase. If you can afford either car what in the hell are you doing spending 55k then worrying about another 5-10k. If you can afford it, it is meaningless as monthly payments, or you should just have the additional funds to put down. As for the wife, I only use my wife as an excuse when I'm weaseling out of something. Putting anything on your wife is a cop out. Any wife, I should think, would want you to spend the 10k more to get exactly what you want, IF you truly could afford it. |

I really don't care about options. The cars are, in my opinion, adequately equipped with no options. I bought a used E90M3 because the price was great at the time. The only criteria for me were a gray or black exterior, a black interior and a CPO warranty. The car I bought has some options, but they mean little to me.
If the options are more important than the car, buy any car that has the options you want. I looked at 335i, but would have had to add a limited slip, tune, downpipes, bigger intercooler, meth injection, nonrunflat tires, coilovers and more to make it what I wanted. The M3 had a powerful enough engine and a good enough suspension in stock form to be a comfortable and sporty daily driver for me. I won't compete with you rich guys about what one can afford and can't afford, but to say that one cannot afford a $55k car because one does not want to spend $65k on a $55k car with $10k worth of options seems stupid to me. |

Performance is most important to me. All the options are certainly nice, but not required - especially if some of them are something that I could add down the line.

M3. Had both, two entirely different cars. M3 is obviously the better all around car. But, if money is the issue, buy what you can afford.

I like when people who have no idea about someone's personal finances tells that person they can't afford to buy a car. Isn't that what his parents/wife are for?
His question is this: "Will I regret having a car with more options but a less capable drivetrain than an M3 with no options?" Sonorous V8 that revs to 8300rpms > any conceivable option |

I don't get this "if you don't get 10k worth of options you can't really afford the car"... That shows why BMW is making poser cars rather than high performance sports cars... Hmmm do I want a high revving V8 or leather seats?

if the IS was fully loaded with nav etc, i could somewhat ponder the decision
but that IS sounds like a stripper to me too... Why don't you buy used? or lease if you don't plan on keeping the car long

As noted above, check the rates offered by credit unions. In February of this year, I got 1.59% for 48 months from my local federal credit union on my 2008 M3. As far as I know, interest rates should be down, not up, since then.

So if you get a 2011 you save about $800 over the life of the loan (1.9% vs 2.49%
Vs paying $800 more for a 2012 with more options? I think you'd get more than $800 when it's time to resell a 2012 vs 2011 Everyone here makes such a big issue of interest rates When at the end of the day it totals less than a $1000 dollars over 5 years
