G35 vs 335i, why do they even compare?

So about a week ago my buddy let me drive his G35.
I've had my 335i for about 7 months now.

I am in no way being partial towards BMW because I own one, but after driving that car I found myself extremely confused as to why I'm seeing comparisons between the G35 and 335i every time I troll through the magazine section at CVS >.<

The 335i, in my opinion, is completely out of its league, from everything to the feel of the car, the smoothness of the ride, the comfort and fit of the seats, the 335i completely shits on the G35. So much in fact that an 8-10 thousand dollar difference between the cars should be disregarded, because it's worth every single penny, and more!

I found myself sitting in the back seat of his car on the way to dennys, and my head was hitting the back window. The entire ride my head was down> My neck was hurting for the rest of the night. Now I'm no racist but I know generally speaking the japanese are a petite people, could this be the reason?!

In all seriousness, for those of you who have ever considered or are considering which car to buy, you shouldn't even think twice. As a matter of fact, 335i and g35 should never be used in the same sentence. Now I know what it is to drive a BMW....

i'm guessing target audience, similar stats / price / engine hp etc.. I drove a g35s before buying the 335i, and there are lots of little things and some things you cant put your finger on that make the bmw special, the g35 just didnt feel special. For some 8-10k is a lot, heck thats what some peoples car costs. So in then end it's what you like, and what you can afford. I still cant understand why people buy pickup trucks, or mini vans...but that is just me.

Yep. G35/IS/CTS/3'r are all within the same segement. I suspect people cross shop a leased 335 vs buy G35.

Btw..The E90(255 hp) didn't fair too well against the G35.

I keep seeing advertisement for the "NEW" G35's...with 330HP....is that right??? and if so will it beat a stock 335i?

Anyone seen the stats on it yet? I just saw the commercial.

That is exactly how I felt when i drove the G35. Its just a huge combination of so many indescribable "little" things that make it that much better.

Your talking about the G37 and no, it still won't come close to the 335i IMO.
As the majority of us on this forum know, although the 335i is advertised at 300hp, in reality it is in the 315-325 HP range. In fact, Some stock 335is are dynoing just as high as e46 M3s, which are advertised at around 333 HP

I just don't get it >.<
I'd be willing to sacrifice 50 HP for better exterior/interior styling, drivability, comfort, feel, and the name, of course Not to mention my brakes, wheels, oil changes, and all that good stuff is covered... for free.

also need to keep in mind while the 335s purchase price is more, it is heavily offset by maintainence and resale

no it wont beat a 335i... but it will be close.

to the OP, the Gen 1 G35 did have a cramped back area, and Gen2 is even more cramped ( in the back ). The G35 should be compared to the 330 not 335i. True G35,G37 etc arent a bmw, they have more features, a warmer interior and imo the outside (g35c) looks better.

I've heard of four things with the g35's oil consumption problems, premature brake & clutch wear & possible manual transmission problems (syncro's grinding). these problems are/were few and far between and pale in comparison to the multitude of HPFP problems. Infiniti makes a car that looks great, performs pretty good, and you wouldnt give a second thought to drive to FL or cross country. for those 335i owners would you really trust your car to drive cross country or 24hr road trip with a deadline ??? Not I. kinda sad I cant drive my 50k car and forced to drive the sonata to florida because any hicup would be terminal to the wedding plans

I had a 2004 G35 Coupe, and I share similar views about that car. However, I still miss it every time I see it on the road. There's something about that exhaust note and the rawness of the power that makes the car fun to drive in its own right. I wish I could have kept that car in addition to my 335...

Car and Driver is reporting a 0-60 time of 5.5 seconds and quarter mile time of 13.9 at 102.8 as opposed to my stock 335i getting 13.4 at 105.8 MPH, recorded with my Gtech pro ofcourse Havent actually brought it to the track yet. This is a very significant margin if you ask me :rocks: And to the post above this one, That really was the only thing I liked about the car- the exhaust note.

one thing about the G35... when you are driving it it really does feel like a big peice of plastic.

when you shut the doors on the car it makes loud clanking noises... the interior is like cheap plastic with paint over it that scratches...

to me I dont think these cars should even come close to compare.

Edmunds did a nice head to head

http://www.edmunds.com/insideline/do...ticleId=121462

They even dyno'd each car!

The G37 is a nice car.

just gotta wait till they are on the road and drag strip.

I too have a Gtech and will wait and see how it pans out.
I know the g37 is friggin heavy 3800lbs and the engine has some power.

With the same driver I'd wager the 335i would win every time...

just a shame infiniti didnt have Direct port injection or a turbo setup on the g37. perhaps in 09... slap a factory turbo and/direct port injection and it will dust the 335i and be a contender against the m3.

If you look at the power curves on both cars, you will see that the 335 is almost always making an additional ~35whp more than the G37 for 90% of the useable rpm range. If the G37 could keep shiftpoints in the last 6500-7500rpm it might have a chance but then again it is always hauling 200lbs more than the 335.

only a few things nicer in our 335i's over the G...

1. leather is better quality
2. seat heaters... uh work !

everything else on the inside is better in the G.

I came from driving a loaded (and modded) '04 Infiniti G35 Sedan and when I was shopping for a new car in the fall '06, I narrowed it down to the '07 335i and the '07 Infiniti G35 Sedan. I loved my Infiniti G35 Sedan, but I heard so much about the F/I twin turbo BMW 335i that I knew I had to test drive it as well...he he.

Although the new generation G35/G37 is absolutely a major improvement over the previous generation G35, it still doesn't match up to the BMW 335i in terms of build quality, handling, power (especially TQ), braking, transmission and overall "road feel" and driving experience.

The Infiniti G35/37 has the advantage of price ("bang for your buck"), interior design and electronics. The Infiniti Navi System is far more advanced and user-friendly than the BMW Navi System for example. Yes, the leather and sport seats of the BMW 335i are far superior than in the Infiniti G35, but the G35/G37's interior "wrap-around" design is just better, imho.

Where the Infiniti G35 (and I suspect the G37) falls short of the BMW 335i are several places including build quality, handling, power (especially TQ), braking, transmission and overall "road feel" and driving experience. Although I haven't driven the '08 G37 of course, I can tell you the brakes on the '07 Infiniti G35 Sedan felt much worse than the previous generation G35 brakes (and Infiniti admitted to "softening" the brakes for MY '07); they are way too spongy now...not sure why they did that since the prev. generation G35 brakes were fantastic. In addition, the G35's auto tranny is just not even in the same league as the 335i's lightning fast and super smooth ZF auto tranny. The G35's auto tranny is still very slow (upshifts are painstakingly slow with about a 1/2 sec. upshift delay..I expected Infiniti would've fixed that by now ) and not nearly as smooth as the 335i's ZF tranny.

With all of this said, I'd say the Infiniti G35 and G37 remain the best bang for your buck in this car segment (and yes, they should be compared with the BMW 3-series since they're more sport than luxury, as opposed to Lexus which is more luxury than sport); the Infiniti G35 and G37 are equal to approx. 8/10ths of the BMW 335i...which is fairly close for less money. If money is a major issue, then those ppl will go for the Infiniti G35/G37 and have a lot of fun with it. However, the 335i is a superior car in so many ways (not to mention the performance modding potential.. he he ) and worth the extra $$, imho.

Both cars are great and engineered well. Lexus, bringing the new IS and Nissan, bringing in the new Infiniti Gs hoped to win over potential BMW 3 series owners. Were they successful? Maybe just a little bit. I would say the fit and finish of the Lexus cars are far closer to the Europeans than Nissan is though. Still not a bimmer.
