vs 335i N54 stage 2 Cobb
So a couple days ago a guy was kind of tailing me and blowing by me as I was driving constant speed.
Came up next to him at a light with three lanes and wide open 60 mph zone road. Had a brief exchange and I asked him if he had a tune because his car seemed rather quick. He said he has stage 2 Cobb and downpipes. I don't know if you can have aftermarket downpipes with catalytic converters, but his car didn't smell like it was catless. Anyhow, everything else looked stock down to the wheels and suspension. My car had less than a quarter tank left and I had my golf clubs and an overnight bag in the back. Car has 3600 miles on the clock with pretty new contis and bone stock except for oem cf spoiler and splitters. Nothing more. No passengers in either car. He tells me he hasn't run it against an M3. I reluctantly oblige because I really really dislike the whole red light race thing but tell him I'll run him to the speed limit and no more for obvious reasons. I figure this will be a sub 5 second race anyway and there are no cars anywhere near us while being in a 60 zone. We take off and judging by his immediate launch and his non jerky shifts, his car is steptronic. I did not modulate my pedal while in S5 with power button pressed and comfort suspension on the EDC. I simply hit the gas 95% of the way and then fully floored. The time it took for the clutch to fully engage 1st and take off was enough for his car to get an immediate half car jump on me. And by the time I was hitting 60 he probably had a 4/5-1 car lead on me. I figure he would have continued to walk my car if we went on to 120 or so. Would be interesting to do a rolling start though. I remember the tuned 335i's always would roll up and try to show them they can beat you. Happened a lot when I had a stock 335is. I'm sure it validates their tune to beat a factory "tuned" N54. Anyway, fun short "safe" race and a cool guy. |

He would have destroyed u from a roll, but the m3 is not a roll racing car so who cares

Well, once the next generation m3/4 arrives, it should finally settle many of the m3 vs 335 debates/threads, esp. once aftermarket tuners become available.

I doubt the bottom end of that engine (S55) is as stout as the N54. We might see quite a few engines let go, once all the tunning begins.

From the press release: "The six-cylinder engine features a closed-deck crankcase design, which increases rigidity and allows cylinder pressures to be increased for maximised power output. And instead of liners, the cylinder bores feature a twin-wire arc-sprayed coating, which results in a significant reduction in engine weight. A further technical highlight is the forged, torsionally rigid crankshaft which, as well as providing increased torque-carrying capacity, is also lighter in weight. Its reduced rotating masses also improve throttle response and acceleration." Last edited by erio; 10-28-2013 at 03:44 PM.. |

I used to have an n54 335i with tune, downpipes, meth injection and an LSD with the auto trans. From a dead stop it was no joke. 0-60 in 3.5 seconds on the V-Box. It would also run with Stage 1 supercharged M3's at triple digits. And now I have an M3. Go figure.

I bet the S55 can handle more. It's an M engine. It's newer and not designed to simplify anything such as the N55. The N55 to me was a compromise vs the N54. They had to make the engine a lot more reliable at the cost of some things that enthusiasts have always hailed the N54 for. All I know is that the N54 had enough injector and HPFP problems and I never want to have anything to do with either again.

I almost got a 335 over my M3.. Realized that no matter how much I modded the 335 I would have wished I had a real M Car.

Looks like you didn't read the whole post.

Of course that happened. Not trying to attack the M3 if you read my entire post. I love it, but instead of putting $13k+ for a supercharger I'd rather put that money down towards what you have as your track car

I was just messin'. I have posted a couple vids here where I was smoked by upgraded turbo n54's (SRanch's 335 and Terry Burger's 135). It's all good fun man!

Haha I know, no worries! I went to Shift Sector and remember your M3 being a beast. Excited to hopefully see you bring the Turbo out to the next event! Definitely the next car I want to get.

It's gonna be a blast as I will get a chance to run in 3 modes: 1) 100% stock on 91 octane; 2) GIAC tuned on 91 octane, and 3) GIAC tuned on 100 octane. Really looking forward to seeing what I can do with stock turbos on this thing. GIAC/Champion just got one to do a 9.83 1/4 mile pass with just a tune and bolt ons. That is Veyron territory! And the full factory warranty is in tact (in my case until Oct 2016)! I think I'm dreaming.
